Michigan Democrats pursue uniform septic code, an elusive water goal

LANSING, MI — Michigan Democrats have introduced legislation that would fulfill a long-held policy goal for clean water advocates: Establishing a statewide septic code.

House Bills 4479 and 4480, and Senate Bills 299 and 300, introduced on Thursday, April 27, would require inspection of residential septic wastewater systems every five years.

If passed, Michigan would become the final state to create uniform standards governing the design, construction, installation and maintenance of septic systems.

Bill sponsors say the underlying goal is to reduce the amount of bacterial and nutrient contamination from the estimated 330,000 failing septic systems statewide, which can drive harmful algae blooms and beach closures.
