The times have changed if my response is any indication... I'm just not feeling it like I did when I watched films of Elizabeth's coronation. It will be interesting to see if William ever makes it to the throne.

(9,197 posts)Watched a little of it. I think some of the historical "veneer" is sheared off somewhat by seeing it in HD and color. The effect, for me at least, was like watching just another boring church service. I know the jewels were real, but they looked like Hollywood props in that kind of vibrant resolution.
The fact the aura and mystery of monarchy has diminished over time - it's hard to feel reverent about people you know way, way too much about - doesn't help.
I think Charles' age is also an issue. When his mother was crowned, she was a young woman and had an entire era of history before her. The country was recovering from the war - they were still rationing at that point - so people could invest their hopes for a better future in her. It was a cultural moment for a country that had just come through great suffering.
Not a lot of people get invested in someone who, by all accounts, is pretty much a temporary place holder for the person monarchists really want to see on the throne - William.
So it was all a bit dull without a lot of the contextual resonance that Elizabeth's coronation possessed.

(15,572 posts)I only watched the tail end of the whole thing and the first thing I thought of seeing them place that crown on his head was how old he is and looks. I felt the same about Camilla since she's actually a year older than me. I know I haven't lived the life of luxury or had people do everything for me, but even with that, most people in their mid to late 70's know they're in the waning years of their lives. I have to imagine that the younger generations aren't all that enamored of the monarchy. I liked how you termed it "temporary place holder".

(656 posts)Charles could live another 20+ years. Not sure he's gonna be that temporary.

(846 posts)Its also ridiculous. In this day and time why do they keep having these ceremonies. Why are these people held in such high esteem? Theyre no different or better than anyone else. They put their pants or panties on like the rest of us. It really is silly. I consider them free-loaders.

(7,203 posts)IMHO they should start to massively strip down the institution (e.g. sell of properties, reduce budget and staff, etc.) so that by the time W & K take over the monarchy is much more spare.

So I guess that makes sense at the first they just winged it. https://guides.ll.georgetown.edu/c.php?g=365741&p=2471214#:~:text=The%20United%20Kingdom%20has%20never,John%20of%20England%20in%201215.

It went something like
when a Battenberg inherits the throne, it would be the end of the British monarchy.
Charles is a Battenberg.
I dont wish it, or care, really. Just something I remember reading once.

How many nameless, impoverished workers died in, say, sugar cane fields to pay for that golden carriage, for instance?

(4,676 posts)didnt watch all of it, I did see the crowning and actually laughed. That crown looked like it weighed 100 lbs, Camilla was fussing with her hair when hers was placed, and reminded me as they sat there in their crowns like when one sees awkward animal pics when their owners dress them and they sit awkwardly in all the unnatural garb.
As an American I dont have strong feelings one way or another, but could not get into the solemnity of the pageantry.
Ilsa
(61,721 posts)on him, too. Camilla's ladies in waiting wore dresses almost identical to hers, and their hair was very similar. Are they her look-a-likes for safe traveling or for when Camillas is tired of Charles pawing her?
I missed all of it this morning except for the balcony appearance at the end. I've seen bits and pieces of the earlier stuff. I liked that one of the songs was sung in Welsh.

(38,614 posts)though I admit I am feeling a little regret about not watching. The last one happened before I was born. I don't know that I'll ever get a chance to see another one.
I don't think much about the politics of it. Just the history.
I wonder if my Hulu account has a replay for me to watch.

(6,655 posts)Age has not been kind to Charles, and Camilla has always reminded me of a sad cow. I'll leave it at that.
But I have to admit to watching every Royal event that's broadcast.
Doesn't matter if it's a wedding, a coronation or a funeral.
Because when it comes to traditional pageantry, NO ONE does it better than the Brits!!
