When the lights finally dimmed on Donald Trumps CNN town hall Wednesday night, a few things were clear.
The former president didnt put forward a vision for his 2024 campaign. He largely ignored real attacks on his rivals, President Joe Biden and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. He spent most of his time re-litigating the 2020 election. And he provided, at best, muddled answers on ultra-sensitive issues like abortion, guns, and Jan. 6.
And Trumps camp couldnt be happier.
A source close to the former president indicated he and his team buzzed about the town hall performance on their flight back to Floridawith music blasting on the sound system.
The former president is even open to doing another CNN town hall, said the source close to him. If invited, he would return. Im sure of it, they said. Hes unbreakable and doesnt back down.
Its tough to outdo an unmatched performance that will go down in history as a masterclass in how to achieve total victory, Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung told The Daily Beast when asked about a CNN round two. Im sure CNN, and many other outlets, would love to have a ratings boost.

(20,975 posts)From Trumpism. Because somehow we werent subject to him and his policies for 4 years as president. The whole idea the a man whose 3 am tweets while on the can, has somehow not been able to saturate his message to the left is the funniest thing self denying that he was born ultra wealthy Anderson Cooper has ever said. The guy is going down with his crap network. That's okay with me.

(5,011 posts)Sure, his base (the people that are going to vote for him regardless) liked it, but my guess is that he gained nothing in the area of gaining voters--which he needs to do to win. I'm sure he turned more people off by being on CNN.

(7,878 posts)He's abandoned the democratic process.
He doesn't need new supporters.
He just needs to radicalize his current supporters into going even further than they already have -- to be successful this time around at installing him as America's dictator.
And to that end, yes, any free air time is a win for him and a loss for democracy.

(11,760 posts)This isn't about voting for Trump and many Republicans.
They CANNOT win through traditional electoral processes. They are counting on our side being conventional while they subvert the foundations of democracy.
Thing is, we have to win EVERY TIME to keep our democratic experiment going. They only have to win ONCE.
A little history lesson:
Neither Mussolini nor Hitler had popular support when they took over their respective countries. Hitler had the support of only about 30% of the country. What he had was a very riled up and fanatical base of supporters, who were willing to do violence, intimidate, lie, and do whatever they needed to do, to obtain and maintain power. What Hitler also had was a Conservative movement, who thought they could use and control him in order to maintain their own power. They lost control and the rest is history.
While history does not "repeat itself", to not look at pretty obvious parallels, will often lead to new but similar tragedies. The United States is not "a special place where Democracy is sacred and can never die". We are as susceptible becoming an autocracy as other countries in history and believing that "our sacred institutions" will protect us, is one of the ways that extremists use to lull people into complacencies.
I always remember what Benjamin Franklin said when asked, "what form of government have you given us...?"
A Republic, if YOU can KEEP IT. Too many of us are detached from politics. We see it as something that happens over there, not really tied to our daily lives, when it is absolutely affecting our lives.

(20,975 posts)He knows if CNN got hit with that amount they'd be out of business. It should take a few months for the first lawsuits. Trump destroys everything he touches. Rupert found out. CNN will find out.

(8,941 posts)Rupert isnt letting him use Fox this time. Other RW networks like Newsmax arent a big enough forum. So, Trump is going to use CNN, who, to paraphrase another DU comment, has thrown out a welcome mat for him.
