We paint with too broad a brush state by state. Florida is a state Trump barely won, there are millions of Floridians who are horrofied by what DeSantis is doing and are working to fight back.

There are good Dems in every state, even states like Alabama and Mississippi has pockets of liberals doing their best to improve their states.

Look at all the states, including Florida, where the votes increasingly doesn't fucking matter.

In Ohio, Retrumplicans can win 49.8% of the state, and end up with 86% of the state and national representation.

The Retrumplican Party has won the national vote for president ONCE in the past 30 years, but have a 6-3 majority on the Supreme Court.

North Carolina is about to ensure Retrumplican rule for a fucking generation, or two, regardless of whether or not that is what a majority of the state wants, or votes for.

Retrumplicans in Texas are taking control of elections in the states largest blue county.

They just tried to violently overthrow our democracy, and won't fail the next time

I can't wait for people to realize we are perilously close to losing, or in some cases have, lost our democracy.

Maybe, instead of asking me what I can't wait for, ask the people of Florida just what in the fuck they are waiting for?

And for that, first people have to get their personal ducks in a row. Define what they need to protect. What they need to fight and defeat.

Self discipline. Commitment. Courage.

"Florida Derangement" is distracting from what's happening in your state, and probably intended to.

Notably, Republicans in most red states have almost unbreakable control. But Florida's still a potential swing state. How many spitting at all the people of Florida in incredible displays of misguided fear and malice can say that about their own?

The Anti-Apartheid sanctions of South Africa impacted all South Africans, not just the pro-apartheid folks.

The Montgomery Bus Boycott targeted all of Montgomery, not just the pro Jim Crow folks.

The Memphis Sanitation Strike targeted all of Memphis, not just the pro Jim Crow folks.

The Civil War targeted all of the Confederacy, not just the people that owned slaves.

The California farm worker strike targeted all consumers of produce, not just those that supported the slave labor conditions.

How you can see the landscape of the past 40 years, and not see the need for bold action, even economic sanctions on those attacking democracy, is beyond me.

Just spotlit and distracting from the fact that it is in a double rank of states where authoritarian takeovers are underway/being attempted. DeSantis is just greedy for personal attention for all the wrong things, like tRump.

But this is a dangerous time even in states where Republicans have unbreakable control, and most are no doubt happy to have the spotlight distracted to FL as they consolidate power and eliminate rights and protections for their own people.

It's also worth noting that a bunch of red-state governments are under complete Republican control and nowhere close to being flippable, but Florida is flippable.

What's happening in Florida could happen anywhere in the U.S.

George Santos got elected in New York. California is where Ronald Reagan got his start in politics, as governor. Literally any state could go rogue.

We need a 50-state strategy. North Carolina was abandoned by the DNC in 2022 and we lost a senate seat we should have had, plus we lost the state Supreme Court, plus the Rethugs now have a super majority in the legislature.

We need a 50-state strategy.

Why California Politics Is Always 15 Years Ahead
The Remarkably Prescient 15 Year Rule Means Trump & the National Republicans are on the Verge of a Spectacular Collapse
Peter Leyden
Oct 16, 2017
·
What do we mean by California is the future when applied to politics? Modern California politics has an uncanny knack of prefiguring what happens in the rest of America in about a 15-year timeline. In other words, what happened in California 15 years ago should be studied closely to see how it will play out in America today. And what’s happening now in California will roll out over America in the next 15 years.

California experiences the future earlier than other parts of the country. Californians invent many new technologies, adopt them early and adapt new systems around them relatively quickly. They absorb waves of immigrants at the highest numbers in the country and accommodate them into their society quicker. The state is a magnet for young people, entrepreneurs, and people who want to change the world. Much of the population is unusually open to trying new things in the economy, society, and in politics.

Prescient?

Lots more at the link.

Honestly why should I? Why should I send money, or phone bank, or write letters?

And I possibly would be buying a home there in the next several years but at this point it is a giant hell fucking no! My wife’s aging parents have a house there that we thought we would be moving into and retiring to at one point. Now…. Not a fucking chance.

I do feel bad for the people that do not support what is happening there that have to live there, but it isn’t JUST gerrymandering. Every time I go there (twice a year) I get accosted multiple times. Constantly getting screamed at and the most disgusting treatment. And this is in Venice! Yeah bad shit can happen anywhere, but it is off the damned charts in florida. I have witnessed ignorance beyond any other place I have ever been. People actively rooting against the states largest employer. Insanity.

Honestly I hope things change there. I just don’t see it happening until that state reaps exactly what the have asked for.

I know how hard it is to keep the faith. We have an incredibly anti-democratic system here (Hawaii) even though the Republicans are in a tiny minority.

We go through this whole charade of the legislature every year and at the end just for people kill whatever they want that they don’t like no matter how the votes went. No matter what they said before. Surprise surprise they killed public financing of elections that way after it passed both houses. Again. Hang in there buddy.

Don't blame Florida voters who still support DeSantis by 60%.

Or just don't talk about how fucked up Florida is becoming under their very popular Governor? Or that their Legislature is over 2 to 1 Republican and the voters keep re-electing the people making the State what it is?

just have to keep coming until Florida elects a governor who understands democracy and free speech. I'm a Virginian, and we've taken a lot of well-deserved knocks over the years when our state government was Republican-dominated.

I think it better that Florida be returned to Spain or the Seminole tribes. I don't think it can be saved. Even God decided He'd rather send floods there as the only alternative.

It's my understanding that his term will be up in the not too distant future. If republicans retain power, will they be as extreme as they are now?

Yer sort of fucking it up for the rest of us. Or at the very least taking a big lead in directing it.

Sorry, it may not be personally your fault but YOUR governor is looking to spread his and your other politicians bullshit nationally.

On 1 July, a new law goes into effect that means a doctor can look a potential patient up and down, decide they are giving off homosexual vibes and refuse to treat them because interacting with gay people goes against their personal beliefs. The doctor will not face any repercussions for denying care and has no obligation to refer the patient elsewhere.

I wish I was exaggerating but I’m not. Last week, Florida’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, signed the Protections of Medical Conscience (pdf) bill, which lets medical professionals and health insurance companies deny patients care based on religious, moral or ethical beliefs. While the new law doesn’t allow care to be withheld because of race, colour sex, or national origin, there are no protections for sexual orientation or gender identity. The only bright spot is that hospitals must still abide by federal laws that require them to stabilise a patient with an emergency condition. In other words, you can’t let a patient die just because they’re wearing a Drag Race T-shirt.
