The Mexican ambassador to the United States criticized Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., over comments he made at a hearing last week, calling the lawmakers words vulgar and racist.
Kennedy at the hearing questioned Drug Enforcement Administration Administrator Anne Milgram, asking about fentanyl moved into the United States from Mexico. The lawmaker spoke about the size of the countries economies and the U.S. buying goods from Mexico
Without the people of America, Mexico, figuratively speaking, would be eating cat food out of a can and living in a tent behind an Outback, Kennedy said.

"As I was listening, my initial reaction was to answer you in the same low, uninformed, and arrogant tone as the one you used. But it is always better to use your brain instead of your guts, so I recalled the vibrant relationship that exists between Mexico and the United States, the ambassador wrote.
I thought of the 33 million American tourists who, last year, visited Mexico eager to learn about our culture; the 800 billion dollars of trade between our two countries came to mind; and of course, the delicious Mexican food that most Americans consume in thousands of crowded restaurants, he continued.

I know I am not alone in despising this fool, Kennedy. He's been an asshole as long as I can remember. It is my hope that people like him die a long and painful death.

(16,907 posts)There was a time in the not too distant past that he sounded, well normal. The guy isn't an idiot, it's just performance art for him. On some level, I think that's worse and shows how his racism is intentional.

(43,795 posts)he was not a Rhodes Scholar.
A First in the BCL programme at Oxford when he went there was extremely hard to earn, by the way. Many Rhodes Scholars failed to earn a first. It is now far easier to earn though.
The hardest of all (and unique to Oxford) to earn is a 'Congratulatory First' (Kennedy did NOT get one, almost no one does). Extraordinarily rare, some colleges at Oxford have not given one out in certain programmes for decades. The professors at your viva (oral exam/defence) ask no questions in regards to your submitted work, they simply stand and give an ovation.

(47,774 posts)when John "no relation" Kennedy sounded like a traditional, moderate republican. It definitely is all performance, which tends to be true with most republicans these days. They've gone from governing to reality TV antics. It is truly disturbing to see how low some people will go to hold onto power.
Oh and I agree, the racism was intentional. He's catering to the ignorant rubes. What a despicable human being.

(36,240 posts)That accent switch is pretty deep. And yeah, he's gotten old and lost his teeth.
It's the ugly inside I'm talking about, though.
I really don't care how young or fashionably dressed they are; Republicans are ugly on the inside.
They're so over their heads when it comes to governance that all they can do is run their treadmill of trifling issues.

The same is true of "Koch" in German-speaking areas. My maternal grandmother was a Koch, and I assure you, no relation whatsoever.

(81,708 posts)At Vanderbilt, Kennedy was elected president of his senior class and named to Phi Beta Kappa. He received a Juris Doctor in 1977 from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he was an executive editor of the Virginia Law Review and elected to the Order of the Coif.[5] In 1979, he earned a Bachelor of Civil Law degree with first class honours from Magdalen College, Oxford,[6][7] where he studied under Sir Rupert Cross and John H.C. Morris.

(6,254 posts)members of the Senate. Its truly vile that a man with his educational background would say these things. Mexico is and will continue to be one of Americas closest economic allies. Kennedys education from wiki:
Education
University of Oxford (England) - BCL (civil law) (1979)
Activities and notes: Rhodes scholar
University of Virginia School of Law - JD (1977)
Vanderbilt University - Bachelor's, political science, philosophy and economics, magna cum laude (1973)
Activities and notes: Senior class president; Phi Beta Kappa honor society
Plus many text books and scholarly works on law. And in the Senate he plays Gomer Pyle.

(111,480 posts)ten miles south of the Mexican border.. Kennedy typifies The Ugly American and I think he'd be shocked to find out Mexicans know how to use flush toilets and computers. What he sees in his home state are the inhumane conditions migrant workers are forced to endure and he assumes it's a step up from their homes in Mexico (and he doesn't realize how many other countries they might be from).
He's a fool. Shun him.

(11,760 posts)At least without the policies that Conservative America has imposed upon Mexico...
Decades of American interference in Mexico since the Mexican-American War have created many of the conditions the plague Mexico. During the Revolution, there was a real chance at reform and an egalitarian movement, but the US quickly interfered and propped up whatever dictator would continue the ability of Americans to exploit Mexico. I have little doubt that Americans helped to assassinate both Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa.
Even the dictator Profirio Diaz understood the problem when he said, "Pobre de Mexico, tan lejos de Dios y tan cerca de los Estados Unidos" (Poor Mexico, so far from God and so close to the United States).

(54,527 posts)Chevalier spoke fluent English, but was told that as a Frenchman in Hollywood, he would stand a better chance of making it big if he exaggerated his accent, rather than trying to suppress it.
By the same token, an elderly friend of mine had wanted to take speech instruction to lose her thick German accent when she came to the USA. Instead, she followed the advice of her PR agent to never lose the accent, and rather let it become part of her trademark. She did just that, and became one of the countrys best known sex therapists. At least with her, its genuine. With Kennedy, its all a contrived performance.
