Democrat Donna Deegan, a former television anchor and founder of a charity group that works with breast cancer victims, on Tuesday upset Republican Daniel Davis to win the mayors race in Jacksonville.
Deegan becomes the first female mayor in Jacksonville history, having defeated a candidate who outspent her significantly. Her opponent had the backing of the Republican Party of Florida and the endorsement of Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Everybody said it could not be done in Jacksonville, said Deegan, who said the campaign and its volunteers had worked for a year and a half ahead of the election. Deegan drew 52 percent of the vote.
Davis a former legislator and CEO of the local Chamber of Commerce and his allies hit Deegan over her participation in Black Lives Matter protests, and the local sheriff said she would install radical policies if elected. Deegan pushed back by calling the attacks smears and billed herself as a candidate who would change a city government that had been dominated by Republicans. Deegan was also able to score some Republican endorsements ahead of Election Day.
Deegans victory gives Florida Democrats a psychological boost just months after the November 2022 elections in which DeSantis won his re-election victory by nearly 20 points, and Republicans crushed Democrats across the state. Democrats all over Florida erupted with glee on social media over Deegans win.

(19,311 posts)And she outperformed the polls no?
Seeing the media try to twist yesterday into anything other than a great day for Dems in the elections is painful.
These are yet more storm clouds for the GOP that their fascist musings are being rejected, yet we won't hear that at all.
Also, a great day for Biden.

(7,411 posts)votes that went her way according to the morning news. Her opponent ran some really nasty ads and they backfired imo. I was watching two local channels this morning and they were talking about the negative campaigning turning off a lot of voters. Funny how those same local channels took the money and ran those commercials anyway. Same ol same ol, but finally a different result.

(119 posts)Last mayor was a moderate R, one previous was D and then a whole string of R's. However, the city went for Hillary in 2016 and for Gillum & Nelson in 2020. Jacksonville has a sizeable minority population to help offset the old white racists I grew up with.

(68,867 posts)held this seat twice in 30 years. It is a significant victory. And I highly doubt it was delivered to us. I lived in GA and went to Jacksonville a few times on the way to the beach. It is a diverse area, and I expect it was a coalition of diverse voters who gave us this yes great victory.

(119 posts)FL Dems needs to work harder in other counties on courting minorities. We let r's overtake us badly in Hispanic outreach during the last 2 election cycles. Jacksonville isn't as Hispanic as Tampa and not anywhere close to Miami.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)nationally in that increasing political involvement is producing more Republican voters? I've read that most FL Hispanics are of different ethnic/cultural backgrounds than elsewhere.
Everywhere else in the nation, large majorities of politically involved Hispanic Americans vote/ARE Democratic.
So seems like Florida's Democrats have had an unusually uphill fight as more Hispanics are voting. It must be especially hard these days for Hispanic Democrats who live, so to speak, on the front lines. Not everyone cares to be drawn to our light (!), and we all know the joys of trying to court conservatives and those who think both parties are out to get them.
Fwiw, I think the theme that lost elections are typically due to Democrats failing to court minorities is overblown at best. Worse, it insidiously both whistle-blows claims that Democrats are (just as) bigoted and distracts from the reality that majorities of every minority voter demographic ARE Democratic. Liberal principles and goals, above all commitment to equality, won them long ago.
In any case, my biggest hopes are on DeSantis's too-eager use of the white male authoritarian party's stick AND that (please!) Florida's Dems are now on a roll again!

(7,878 posts)Never mind, you basically answered it yourself, even though you, yes, tried to downplay the victory.
"Last mayor was a moderate R, one previous was D and then a whole string of R's" = city that regularly votes for Republican mayors finally voting for a Democratic mayor once again.

(119 posts)Yes, Donna is the 2nd Dem mayor in 30 years. Donna Deegan, Dem won this time. Lenny Curry - R won last time, Alvin Brown - Dem won before him. Stating the truth is not downgrading her win, I am thrilled - as previously stated.
I don't know why you hating on a Democrat since birth who has voted in every election possible and never for a Repug.

(7,878 posts)...surely you can see how your responses have, yes, been downplaying a very surprising win for a Democrat in a city that, yes, apparently has only voted for a Democrat for mayor one other time in the past three decades.
Enjoy your stay!

(25,525 posts)As for winning the primary, if Trump's support somehow goes into free-fall, all bets are off, though I think it's also likely that another candidate may emerge. I have no clue who that might be, however.
