CHICAGO Local Satanists are raising hell with a new lawsuit alleging the city is barring them from saying Hail Satan at City Council meetings. The lawsuit filed this month by the Satanic Temple says the city violated the religious groups First Amendment rights by excluding disfavored minority faiths from giving an invocation at the start of City Council meetings.
Vavrick said he offered to send Chicago officials the full script of his invocation ahead of time.
The invocation:
Let us stand now, unbowed and unfettered by arcane doctrines born of fearful minds in darkened times. Let us embrace the Luciferian impulse to eat of the tree of knowledge, and dissipate our blissful and comforting delusions of old. Let us demand that individuals be judged for their concrete actions and not their fealty to arbitrary social norms and illusionary categorizations. Let us reason our solutions with agnosticism in all things, holding fast only to that which is demonstrably true. Let us stand firm against any and all arbitrary authority that threatens the personal sovereignty of one or all. That which will not bend must break. And that which can be destroyed by truth, should never be spared its demise. It is done.
Hail Satan.

(82,849 posts)It's one of those "either everybody gets to or nobody gets to" things. Official government proceedings really aren't a forum for expressing one's religious beliefs, no matter how sincerely held (or how conveniently any of those beliefs were formed, even if it's to pwn the libs). You need to publicly profess your faith? Go to a meeting of your co-religionists and wow each other with your public piety. The city council meeting is where the business of the city is conducted.

(9,459 posts)To include Satan. Its as prejudicial as it is stupid. Stop it.
Chicago and all city governments should learn from this.

(130,538 posts)They are not actual Satan-worshippers; they are anti-theists who are trying to demonstrate that in practice only some gods are permitted to be mentioned in government proceedings, and if the government agency are serious about freedom of religion they have to allow either all gods or none of them. So, if they don't want anybody mentioning Satan they can't allow the Christian god or Jesus or Allah or any other god to be mentioned either.

(4,099 posts)According to the accepted Abrahamic retelling, YAHWEH wanted to destroy his creation.
"Satan" wanted to inform his creation.
Where Religion deceives, Mythology informs.
Where Religion obscures. Mythology reveals.
This, is that.
