Paula Dean Kranz Broadwell (born November 9, 1972[1]) is an American writer, academic, and anti-terrorism professional.[2][3] She is the co-author with Vernon Loeb of the The New York Times Best Seller,[4] All In: The Education of General David Petraeus, a sympathetic biography of then International Security Assistance Force commander David Petraeus.[5][6] On November 9, 2012, she was reported to have been involved in the extramarital affair with Petraeus that triggered his resignation as Director of the CIA when it was discovered by the FBI.[7]

-------

Broadwell grew up in Bismarck, North Dakota, and attended Century High School, where she was homecoming queen and valedictorian of the class of 1991.[8]

Broadwell graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1995. She earned a master's degree from the University of Denver's Josef Korbel School of International Studies in 2006.[9][10] She earned a Master of Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.[11] She later entered the Ph.D. program at Department of War Studies at King's College London.[12]
Career

She served in the United States Army and the United States Army Reserve. She was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the Reserves in August 2012.[13]

She was Deputy Director of the Jebsen Center for Counter-Terrorism Studies at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.[3] She also worked with the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force.[3]

Broadwell met Petraeus in 2006 when he was a speaker at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.[14] She was a graduate student at the time.[14] According to the Charlotte Observer, she told him about her research interests after he spoke.[14] He handed her his card and offered his help.[14] She began a doctoral dissertation that included a case study of his leadership, with Petraeus fully cooperating.[14] She co-authored a biography of Petraeus, All In: The Education of General David Petraeus, with Vernon Loeb that was published in January 2012.[15]

Broadwell has also written for the New York Times and the Boston Globe.[16][17]
Personal life

Broadwell is married to Scott Broadwell, an interventional radiologist[3] and resides in Charlotte, North Carolina.[14] They have two young sons.[14]
Extramarital affair with General David Petraeus

In 2012, an FBI investigation traced threatening emails originating from Broadwell to a friend of David Petraeus named Jill Kelley of Tampa, Florida.[18]According to the Washington Post, the e-mails indicated that Broadwell thought that Kelley was starting an affair with Petraeus.[18] The emails were described as “threatening and harassing” but not enough to warrant criminal charges.[18] That investigation led to the discovery by the FBI of Broadwell's relationship with Petraeus.[18] The revelation was identified as the reason for Petraeus' resignation as Direction of the CIA.[19][2]
