Conservatives Furious As Lawmakers Close In On Debt Limit Deal

WASHINGTON — Hard-line conservative Republicans are anxious about a possible deal between House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and President Joe Biden that would avert a catastrophic debt default.

The arrangement would raise the government’s debt ceiling through next year, depriving Republicans of another chance to take it hostage before 2024.

“They want to move it past the presidential election,” Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), a member of the far-right House Freedom Caucus, told HuffPost on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters, Norman and others in his party said they’d just heard that negotiators were leaning toward a larger debt ceiling increase than Republicans previously supported in exchange for unspecified spending cuts.

OK, it's not enough to rent a mansion on Foxhall Road, but even a modest apartment in Northwest puts you in one of the coolest places to live in the eastern USA. Guys like that will NEVER know what it means to be scared shitless that their Social Security check might not come for three months. I'm sure most of all members of the Republican caucus are aware of the potential damage a default might cause. I just don't think that more than 5 of them give a rat's ass (if that many).

responsible. Right-wing claims that Republicans in general and (so-called) Conservatives are sober, responsible actors dedicated to keeping the government solvent and protecting the fortunes of the commmonwealth have been lied for the last two decades. Longer, if you remember the borrow-and-spend antics of the Reaganites. Their claims are bill (excrement).

The Republicans haven’t balanced a budget for two decades and their only “solution” is yet more tax cuts for their billionaire campaign donors.

These people have no more business being allowed to manage the economy of the US than the corrupt oligarchs of the Latin American right and the whimsical, irresponsible “populists” of the Latin American left.

it will only hurt the middle class and poor. There should be NO deal on doing the duty of raising the debt ceiling.

Raised 3 times under trump

9 times under bush

18 times under Reagan

All without a fucking peep from the right!

...the nation defaults, the world economy and ours plunges into a recession, and you can bet the co-opted media -- and thus, the voters -- will blame Biden rather than putting it squarely at the feet of Republicans.

Any spending cuts agreed to can be quickly and easily reversed -- and then some! -- almost before they even happen if we manage to win back the presidency and House and retain Senate control in 2024.

So, yes, it's bullshit, but it's also necessary bullshit given how our (mostly uninformed) populace will react if Republicans force us to default. That would do far more home to everyday Americans than whatever spending cuts -- which, once again, can be quickly and easily reversed in less than two years -- are agreed to.

EDIT: As a side note, if we do those three things I mentioned -- win back the presidency and House and retain Senate control -- you can also breathe a sigh of relief that odds are the debt ceiling will be eliminated, because if we keep control of the Senate, odds are it will be without Sinema and Manchin, which means the filibuster is on the chopping block, raising the debt ceiling (and possibly its entire elimination) without bipartisan agreement is on the chopping block, etc.

So, focus your anger on getting Democratic control of those two branches in 2024 and we can put these worries aside.

Typically, once someone like that gets in control they don't relinquish it peacefully.

These guys aren’t conservatives; they’re reactionaries. To call them conservatives is to ignore how far to the right the political spectrum has shifted here in the US and normalize their right-wing extremism

WWII on the Eastern Front, one of the most brutal wars in memory fought between the far right NAZIs of Germany and the far left Communists of Soviet Russia. No real good guys in that one. Soviets were our allies, but hardly our friends. Both sides fought with a savagery that harkens back to the Middle Ages.

The FBI has weeded out most of the extremist far left groups in America. It's time they started cleaning out the far right militias and terrorists.
