The Harris County Democratic Party posted on its Facebook that they condemned Duttons actions and saw them as retaliation against fellow Democrats.
His actions are childish and harmful and completely unacceptable, the post said.
While its gained the most attention recently, the transgender athletes bill is not the only area where Dutton is at odds with his party and various education advocates.
Duttons priority bill addresses a current legal battle between the TEA and Houston ISD, after the agency attempted to take over the district under a previous law written by Dutton but was blocked by an appeals court. It seeks to wrest power away from local administrators and put it under state control.
Duttons alma mater in Houston ISD, Wheatley High School, has received an F rating for multiple years, even as Dutton has fought for the schools improvement.
If youre not going to fix the schools in Northeast Houston so every child has a future, then we need to change the school district, Dutton said.

And it looks like the procedural arguments are undermining the impeachment.

The Texas State Democratic Party has spoken.
I agree with their assessment.
Better to acknowledge a frustrating truth than to ignore the elephant in the room.
So to speak of course...

(77,795 posts)4. Glad I was wrong on both points - DUTTON voted Present and impeachment passed!

He said he was doing so on due process grounds. He thought the impeachment was rushed and that the vote was being held virtually "in the dead of night", which is ridiculous since it was televised and the middle of the afternoon.
Rather a bizarre defense. I'm not sure what his motivations were. Playing the middle, I guess.

(28,836 posts)6. A lot of people seem to have got the same impression.
His comments do sound more like a "no" than a "not present".
