By asking taxpayers to pay his $3.3 million settlement.
That said, looks like the procedural arguments are undermining the impeachment.

OP
They wouldn't have brought the charges if they didn't think they had the votes.

I can't imagine a good reason to do this to their party unless they really wanted him out.

It wasn't as close as I thought it might be, but this was over as soon as they announced there would be a hearing.
The Senate may even convict him. I wouldn't be surprised. I think the TX GOP can't afford for him to remain in office now.

He can only stall the indictments for so long, and I think they GOP knows that they're going to catch up with him, so they're distancing themselves from him now.
He also pissed them off by trying to pass his hush money payoffs on to the taxpayers. That's apparently a bridge too far, even for the GOP.

The House committee that recommended the impeachment said in a memo to members on Friday that they began investigating Paxton because of a $3.3 million settlement he reached with former employees in a whistleblower suit, which needed state funding. Speaker Dade Phelan has said its an improper use of taxpayer funds, and lawmakers have balked at providing the funds, which were not included in final drafts of the state budget.
We cannot over-emphasize the fact that, but for Paxtons own request for a taxpayer-funded settlement over his wrongful conduct, Paxton would not be facing impeachment by the House, it said.
