1. The problem with getting rid of the filibuster is that the dems will be in the minority again

at some point. It definitely needs reform, even if it it to make them stand there and talk. I'm not saying that the dems will be in the minority any time soon, but it will happen at some point. We had a good election this year thanks to the Todd Akin types.

4. So what? The filibuster reform we are talking about returns it to what it was for 200 years.

It worked just fine until the new rules were put into place that didn't require an actual filibuster. Yes if, and when, Republicans get control they'll get some of their crazy shit passed that wouldn't have cleared a filibuster. But they always manage to do that anyway. What legislation have Democrats successfully filibustered int the last 20 years? The Patriot Act? The Bush tax cuts? They held up some wacko Bush judges for a while but the 'gang of twelve' eventually got almost every one of them through.

Anything crazy they get passed when we don't have the current filibuster rules can be undone when we retake control if the filibuster is reformed.

3. It should not be "Get rid of...", it should be reform.

Make them actually filibuster, as in, stand there in front of the country and babble incoherently for 6 days if they want to block something.

I believe that that was the original plan.

Doesn't anybody remember the movie with Jimmy Stewart, "Mr. Smith goes to Washington?" That's the way it's supposed to work! A real filibuster, not a virtual one. The same concept can be seen in Star Trek's episode 23: A Taste of Armageddon. War and filibusters should be difficult, not easy.

5. Time to put up or shut up.

If we are convinced of the superiority of our ideas, we should at least be given the opportunity to enact them when we have the majority. If they work, we will be rewarded. If they don't, well then, that's another story, but at least we will finally have a chance to find out.
