First, will the Republican Party finally "get it" and start debating real issues and provide real alternatives?

We also have to understand that their party is essentially run by a very small faction of oligarchs and power brokers that have enlisted the ranks of the racists, ignorants, and just plain whackos to give them some voter depth.
Getting it is a tall order for this bunch.

To your second question: Unfortunately, these people will not be going away anytime soon. Fortunately, attrition should diminish whatever political clout they may have had.
