People familiar with the matter said special counsel Jack Smith wants to base the case where most of possible misconduct happenedJustice Department prosecutors are planning to bring a significant portion of any charges stemming from the possible mishandling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, the home of former president Donald Trump, at a nearby federal court in south Florida, according to people familiar with the matter.
The legal rationale for such a move is that the bulk of the conduct at issue in the investigation occurred in the southern district of Florida, in and around Trumps Palm Beach residence and private club, even if much of the investigation led by special counsel Jack Smith has been handled by a grand jury in Washington. D.C., these people said.
That approach by prosecutors does not rule out the possibility of some charges, such as perjury or false statements, being filed in the nations capital in connection with out of grand jury appearances or law enforcement interviews that took place there, according to these people, who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the internal discussions.

(43,174 posts)Yes, there's a risk of a Trumpist sympathizer on the jury to torpedo it, but you're probably just as likely to have one in New York or some other jurisdiction.
Does jury selection cover the state?

(15,585 posts)The bulk of the crimes were all committed in Florida.
Only obstruction, perjury, false statements could possibly justify a DC venue.

(15,082 posts)That by law, a trial must be held where the crime happened. But he may also face charges in DC.
Remember that Manafort was tried in both DC and Virginia.

(26,044 posts)..:is there even the slightest chance you could get a jury in Florida without a single MAGA diehard who will guarantee a mistrial?
Tommy Carcetti
(43,174 posts)You could get a MAGA holdout here, but you could just as well get one in New York as well.
