Robertson is widely credited with ushering Christian-conservatism into mainstream politics in the 1980s and 1990s, and laying the groundwork for the modern right-wing culture war. He has a history of extreme, bigoted commentary including that gay people and abortion caused 9/11, that Haitians deserved the 2010 earthquake that ravaged the island nation, and that feminists are evil.
The 700 Club, Robertsons long-running program on the CBN, was his most common platform for hate. In the days after 9/11, he brought on pastor Jerry Falwell to discuss the tragedy. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America, I point the finger in their face and say, You helped this happen,' Falwell said, to which Robertson said I totally concur and that the agenda has been adopted by the highest levels of our government.
Robertsons bigotry toward gay people was boundless. He said on The 700 Club that he wished Facebook had a vomit button for when he came across a picture of gay people kissing, equated gay people with Nazis and Satanists, suggested God unleashed hurricanes and other natural disasters punishment for homosexuality. I would warn Orlando that youre right in the way of some serious hurricanes, and I dont think Id be waving those flags in Gods face if I were you, he said of Disney Worlds Gay Days. Itll bring about terrorist bombs; itll bring earthquakes, tornadoes, and possibly a meteor.

Pat Robertson was evil.
Here's to the demise of the 700 Club and all other organizations fueled by obscuring truth through delusion and instilling hatred throughout mankind.

(37,667 posts)A constant theme on his 700 Club was how persecuted Christians were, and how the dreaded Secular Humanists were just itching to round them up and put them all in concentration camps.
Including "dramatizations" where a model family (husband, wife, small boy and even smaller girl, white and blonde, for course), were being forced into a black van by armed men in black tactical gear. This was around the same time as the "black helicopters" paranoia.

(39,480 posts)... Pat Robertson gained control of one with his Christian Broadcasting Network.
When Robertson and his fellow freaks weren't spewing their Christian Coalition hatred they ran it as "The Family Channel."
When Disney eventually acquired the channel for $5.3 billion in 2001 it was with the stipulation that they would continue to broadcast Robertson's "700 Club" at a reasonable hour.
The whole normalization of these Christian fascists by the mass media is one of the reasons I quit cable television more than a decade ago, and it's one reason I will be celebrating when cable television finally dies.
I have nothing nice to say about Pat Robertson on the occasion of his death. If his spirit lives on, as he seemed to believe, I suspect he is now suffering the ultimate smack down for his crimes against humanity.

Robertson, smugly, « well, its too late to rectify any of that now, isnt it? »
