And another group of nurses is canceling a 2027 event because of similar concerns, according to the Orange County Convention Center.
The cancellations are the latest economic blow to the region, coming in the wake of Walt Disney Co.s decision to drop plans for a nearly $1 billion corporate campus in Orlando with 2,000 high-paying jobs.

(82,849 posts)There's plenty of blame to go around, as the legislature enables DeSantis as well as any co-dependent partner could. The question is whether Florida Democrats can get their act together and mount a challenge to this political malpractice.

(2,168 posts)FL Dems run with the same platform as republicans... Anti Cuba, anti Maduro, anti anything that might be able to be accused of being the dreaded socialism... Like universal healthcare and universal higher Ed.
And if one runs on the same platform as republicans, then the electorate will vote republican every time.

(555 posts)Where transgenders identify as a gender other than that they were identified at birth, Non-binaries identify as 1) neither or 2) some combination of both. They feel they are not the one, nor the other, so non-binary, or something else.
Some are called enbys as a nickname "nb's"

(4,167 posts)Non-binary is an umbrella term for people who don't identify as specifically one gender and/or sex. It's the shades of grey between male and female, or man and woman.

(14,487 posts)Nonbinary refers how they identify with regards to gender - they don't really feel like male or female really fits their identity.
Bisexual refers to sexual orientation - they are attracted to both male and female sexual partners.
Example - a trans woman (male at birth, identifies as female) can be sexually attracted to men or women. Gender identity is not about sex.

(4,167 posts)As Lisa explained so well, "bisexual" refers to individuals who are attracted to people, rather than to a specific sex. "Non-Binary" is not about attraction to other people, it's only about self-image.
It's also a very broad term in that there are many ways to not match the conventional binary view of male/female or man/woman. A group of people who consider themselves non-binary might all have a very different definition of how that term applies to each of them. For instance, one person might be quite androgynous in behavior; they are male and very comfortable with a male body, but still have a very feminine presentation in terms of body language and clothing style. They might use the term "non-binary" to describe themselves. At the same time, another person might have an internalized body image of being both male and female; this may not fit their actual morphology, but it's the body map that their brain believes to be true.
Personally, I prefer the term "queer" over "non-binary" but either one fits me; I'm also a gay woman, not the least bit bisexual.

(16,269 posts)It was the same way with Trump. Even those of us who knew he was going to be awful didn't fully anticipate just how awful.
At least that's how it was for me. When TFG got elected, I knew his presidency would be a nightmare. But once he was in office, I was literally floored on a daily basis by all the different ways he managed to be even more horrible than I could ever have imagined. I finally learned to expect the unthinkable, but that only helped a little.
It's hard for normal people to anticipate the actions of an amoral sociopath, because our brains don't work that way.

(6,573 posts)Orlando is in Orange County.
"In the last Presidential election, Orange county remained overwhelmingly Democratic, 60.9% to 37.8%."
I certainly support sending a message to DeFascist, & more importantly to FL voters in general about how policies like his drive business away from the state, but I'm always concerned about how boycotts of Orlando establishments affect the thousands of folks there who rely on manual labor jobs, the majority of whom are solidly Democratic.
Now, the owners/executives/etc of the convention center, hotels, & related venues & service companies may be much more right-leaning than Orange County as a whole, & if that's the case, & they see DeFascist's policies hurting their bottom line, it might make them more careful about what politicians they support in the future, which of course would be a good thing.

(4,167 posts)Given the current state of affairs in Florida, I would not feel safe or comfortable stepping foot in any part of the state. It doesn't matter that Orlando trends Democratic in voting, I still would not attend a convention there because of the state apparatus.
Other cities that host conventions are likely to be affected as well, just give them time to start reporting the cancellations.

(11,122 posts)The convention business is too often overlooked. Large cities can rise and fall based on this very lucrative business. Hotels, restaurants, and convention halls rely on these events planned years out.
Organizations, associations, and businesses can yank planned conventions or boycott states or cities to affect real change. Governors can look tough standing up to teachers and theme parks. They don't dare defy the chamber of commerce.
