And David Gergen is, as Andrew Sullivan pointed out, well connected with Bain capital.

Paula Broadwell is a research associate at Harvard's Center for Public Leadership (see her credits at the bottom of the article here: http://ricks.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2011/01/13/travels_with_paula_i_a_time_to_build ) who is headed by Gergen.
Just one step away from Romney, she was.

(28,347 posts)Just Googled it and found this:
Last week, Rep. Doug Lamborn (R) of Colorado, on a Denver talk radio show, said, Even if some people say, Well, the Republicans should have done this or they should have done that, they will hold the president responsible. Now, I dont even want to have to be associated with him. Its like touching a tar baby and you get it, youre stuck, and youre a part of the problem now and you cant get away.
The term tar baby comes from the 19th-century Uncle Remus stories, where B'rer Fox uses a doll made of a lump of tar to trap B'rer Rabbit, who gets more stuck the more he pummels and kicks the tar baby. In more recent parlance, tar baby is widely considered racial slur.
Other Republicans, including Sen. John McCain of Arizona and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, have in recent years apologized for using the phrase "tar baby," although in reference to various government policies and projects, not a black man.
And then Tuesday night, former GOP presidential candidate and MSNBC contributor Pat Buchanan, in a tête-à-tête with the Rev. Al Sharpton, referred to Mr. Obama as "your boy." My what? the Rev. Mr. Sharpton shot back. My president, Barack Obama? What did you say?

(17,863 posts)when you consider it originates with an African story of an African hero trapped by a "tar baby". Other cultures have similar legends. Just because the term is used in a racially insensitive manner does not mean that it cannot be used to refer to this situation. It is the right analogy for the situation.
I will not stop using words like cracker and spook because some use them in racially insensitive ways.

(10,611 posts)As an African American, I understand the intended context of the term, and am not offended by its correct use just because some likely racist RWers want to attach the image to President Obama.
Indeed this situation IS a RW tar baby - with no African Americans involved.

Anyone who closes their mind and literary experience to his works, or the works of Twain and others, is MISSING a rich Historical, Social, and Cultural experience.
Like many other words and phrases, "Tar Baby" CAN and HAS been used as a racial epithet, but this is not ALWAYS the case.
In the post above, it was used in its correct context.
Once you touch the Tar Baby, you can't let go.
The harder you try, the worse it gets.
It gets ALL over you, and you can't wash it off.

(135,425 posts)I'm not talking about Paramour Broadwell, or Whistleblower Kelley.
I think, after Broadwell and Petraeus parted ways in July-ish, there was another woman on the scene.
I don't know why I think this, but I can't shake this sense.
The whole "angry My Man emails" thing with Kelley just seems very 'odd' to me.
It will be interesting to see who accompanied Petraeus to Libya...

We'll probably never get confirmation about the Kelly relationship though.
MADem
(135,425 posts)An entirely above-board, "couples" acquaintanceship, based on professional associations.
The Kelley woman was a social director, a protocol officer, in essence. Odds are good her relationships--her very professional relationships--bring her closer to the WIVES of the flag/general officers than they do the one-through-four stars. Protocol officers have to not only deal with the protocol officers of the other VIPS/execs their bosses associate with, they also have to deal with the wives (nowadays, husbands, too, as the upper ranks slowly integrate more female generals/admirals) to make sure that everyone is on the same page. If these courtesies are not offered, it can be ugly. If a social director/protocol officer doesn't make these connections, he or she will have trouble doing the job.
If you look at the widely published picture of the Kelley and the Petraeus couples, you'll see Ms. Kelley standing beside Mrs. Petraeus, well separated from the General. Not that a picture can always tell us a thousand words, but my sense is there was no frigging in the rigging with Kelley and the General at all. Kelley's twin sister? Who knows, but I doubt that, too.
This photo, taken by reporter Amy Scherzer for the Tampa Bay Times, shows (left to right) Jill Kelleys twin sister, Gen. David Petraeus, Scott Kelley, Jill Kelley, and Holly Petraeus.
Photos from http://www.poynter.org/how-tos/newsgathering-storytelling/visual-voice/195166/the-photos-tell-a-different-story-of-david-petraeus-jill-kelley/
I think there may have been a THIRD woman; a replacement that took the place of Broadwell back in July. I think Broadwell might have THOUGHT the "new woman" was Kelley, but she was mistaken--it's someone else entirely.
Diane Feinstein wants to see Petraeus's trip report/travel orders to Libya. Was this person on that trip, I wonder?

Never mind that "adultery" is in the UCMJ, and we've got "conduct unbecoming" --as evidenced by those batshit crazy emails--when it comes to her behavior with regard to the McDill Protocol/Social Director.
Her military career is in very grave jeopardy. I don't think it will survive, and she could end up doing time.

She's so special... how dare he have, or seem to have, someone else!
Fuck her; I have no pity for this woman and women like her who leave hurt wives, wrecked families... in their wake. Sure, the men are largely at fault and I do not exonerate them one bit. But women like her are something I cannot say on this board or I'll be flamed or alerted on.
The only victim here is Mrs. Petraeus!

(86,636 posts)I have some thoughts about these connections.
a) Broadwell may not have sent these emails, anyone actually seen them? Could just be hear-say fodder for the media.
b) Corporate media is well known for stinky smokescreens to cover up even more stinky stuff, we should be more skeptical by now, shouldn't we?
c) So the victim of the alleged nasty emails is a friend of the family and has a nice, tidy life with a much hotter partner than the general with little motivation outside the fact that she's a 1%er too, and she's not taking a fall, just a cog in the wheel.
I think this story is a smokescreen to a much larger issue that has everything to do with how bad mittens looked all through the summer, it called for a larger strategy. After his 47% party revelations in May (and where else but the alleged nasty email victim's hometown and where the general had lived for years among the Cheneyites?), my thinking is that the audience at that party went to work finding ways to take the prez down at all costs, and some were willing to take a faux fall for the cause. Too many cozy alliances... like the picture at the top of this thread implies. Why would this alleged paramour be so cozy with the Ham?
This web tool is very helpful in discovering who is connected to whom, check it out and do some investigating on your own. There are some real eye openers to discover. (just double-click on any entity with an "x" in the upper right-hand corner and the map will reconfigure to highlight the connections to that entity... very revealing, connect the the dots! There's a key to how to use the tool on the right panel of each page.)

(9,893 posts)He was on a panel discussing this matter.
Gergen was very upset that the FBI would dig deep into someone's e-mail based on a non-threatening e-mail sent by that someone.
Me thinks that Gergen has some stuff in his e-mail that he or someone else don't want to go public.
Nonetheless, I think that there is a real civil liberties issue here. The FBI went over the line in part because the agent seemed to want a closer relationship with the recipient of Broadwell's not exactly threatening e-mail.
