'Effectively broke': Trump is leaving swing state Republicans in poverty as donors flee

Trump's "use 'em and lose 'em" policy starts its toll.

If you want some smug laughs this morning, this is your story.

Bottom line is they spent all their money fighting these idiotic "trump-won" cases and challenging decisions--now they can't fund the next round of campaigns because the donors don't trust them to spend their money wisely.

snip

Republicans in battleground states including Arizona and Michigan are paying heavily for their “full-throated support of former President [Donald] Trump,” Reuters reported Wednesday.

Big donors who have historically given millions to the state parties are fleeing, largely because they don't want to be associated with the support for Trump’s claims that the 2020 election was stolen.

"I question whether the state party has the necessary expertise to spend the money well," said Ron Weiser, historically one of Michigan GOPs biggest donors who gave $4.5 million during the midterm elections. This election cycle, he’s giving nothing, blaming the “ludicrous” claim that Trump carried the state for his decision.

His refusal to fund the party has been reflected across the country, leaving many state apparatus close to poverty, according to Reuters which took a deep dive look at financial filings.

The GOP organization in various states that supported Chump for the last 6 or 7 years are finding out now. Chump is all "Donations tor me-me-me" and he won't share anything for other party candidates. If he goes to a rally for state candidate (rarely) he ends up talking about his own campaign and legal problems about 95% of the time.

Chump's idea of "supporting" a local GOP candidate is to send out a tweet, which costs him nothing.

Walker was on Trump’s football team before Trump destroyed the USFL.

I laugh when I hear Trump bankrupted three casinos, because I know he bankrupted an entire football league that was doing just fine before Trump bought into it.

I really thought there was no bottom to the Republicans' well of stupidity. As long as the defendant was rampaging around, I figured the big money boiz would keep throwing money at him, regardless of how it was spent. We'll see what happens when the defendant sees the money pipeline begin to dry up.

tRump is splitting the GOP. If he is the ticket, then the rational half will stay home or not vote for Prez.

If he is not on the ticket, his base will stay home "to teach the go**amn RINOs a lesson!".

If the GOP block him (due to indictments / convictions) he may run as a third party candidate. His base have threatened to write him in anyway.

I don't think there is any good path for the GOP, except to axe tRump from the party now and get on with rebuilding the party from the ground up and sacrificing their 2024 prospects for future return. They won't.

This may be a golden opportunity for Democrats. If they win a trifecta (Prez, House, Senate) they may be able to push through lots of democratic measures, like:
* tight integrity requirements for federal justices, especially on the Supreme Court.
* voting rights, such as asserting people are free to give water to people in line, for a simple start
* personal freedoms for LGBTQ2S+ are freedoms for all
* preserving interstate abortion rights
* increase in rational gun control

... and so much more that could be done.

USA and progressive nations are so close to breaking through to a much more progressive future and blocking authoritarianism for a long time.

In Michigan and Arizona, anyway.

"It's too bad we let the right wing of our party take over the operations," said Jim Click, whose family has been a longtime major Republican donor in Arizona. He and other donors said they would give money directly to candidates or support them through other political fundraising groups.

For a chuckle from a crazy party apparat-chik who finds her crazy grassroots donors much less critical:

Kristina Karamo, chair of the Michigan state party, didn't respond to a request for comment for this story. In the campaign for her position, she said that she wanted to break ties with established donors, accusing them of exploiting the party for their own gain, and wants to rely more on grassroots members.
