It would be irresponsible not to speculate.
Now, it's an interesting thing that Mitt's father was born in Mexico because he ran for president in 1968. I assume he was ineligible to be president because he was not a natural-born citizen, and his parents weren't serving the country. They had fled the country so they could continue to have polygamous relationships. The only reason they came back was because there was a backlash against yanquis during the Mexican Revolution. So, Mitt Romney's father was born in Mexico and therefore was a Mexican. I don't know if he had proper immigration papers, but I doubt it since his parents weren't exactly kosher with the federal government, if you know what I mean. Since George Romney was almost certainly an illegal Mexican immigrant, that means that Mitt Romney was an anchor baby.
No wonder he's overcompensating by being the biggest jerk in the field about immigration issues.

(9,612 posts)Wouldn't his illegal immigration status have been brought out then if that was the case? Especially since then he couldn't be considered a natural-born citizen.
And it's not like no one would have thought about the issue; it was raised just four years before because Barry Goldwater was born in the Arizona Territory, before it was admitted to the Union.
The fact is that George Romney was born an American Citizen, child of two American citizens, even if he was born in Mexico. We don't need to sink to our own brand of birtherism, thank you.

(9,464 posts)The Romneys of Mexico were all American citizens, from what I've read.

(25,183 posts)In fact, Mexico treated the Mormon emigres as unwelcome, but tolerated, tourists. They were not allowed to buy land, only rent it. The only reason they came there was because this relatively lawless country would not persecute them for their polygamy. When parts of Romney's family finally decided that they'd had enough, his father moved back to the US, and re-integrated with American society.
I prefer to think of this as a temporary exile. There are a thousand reasons to oppose Mitt Romney in his bid for the presidency, what his horny ancestors did is the least of those reasons.
