Where are you and how is Hilary treating you?
I'm between Torrance and San Pedro in LA County. Cleared off all of the wicker furniture and pillows on the porch, took in front door decor and brought in anything light, secured the trash cans. Took down my Scottish Terrier house flag and the flag pole.
No winds...yet...rain, just sprinkling right now.
EDIT FOR UPDATE:
Tropical Storm Warning: Affected Areas: LAX, Long Beach, Redondo Beach, Santa Monica, Torrance...WIND WARNING

(6,548 posts)Expecting increasingly heavy rain this afternoon and this evening. Off and on light to moderate now. Our problems usually center around street, creek and stream flooding, as well as beach erosion. Our winter storms can be pretty intense, so it will be interesting to see how we handle heavy weather from the Southwest as opposed to the northwest. peace.

(287,164 posts)The good news is that you will have none of those Florida gators showing up un your backyard 😀.
This must be a once in a lifetime experience for most of you.
Magoo48
(6,548 posts)I probably wont see another one of these, but I do believe that warmer sea water later into the falls will mean todays situation will be repeated with more frequency.
No gators here, thats for sure.

(1,538 posts)No rain yesterday. Definitely rain right now. Light winds, about 78 degrees, getting ready for a spanking. Everything off the patio because we expect heavy winds. If it rains all day this town stops cold, especially on a

Winds were a bit heavy in gusts, but nothing out of normal for a winter storm.
On edit - landfall is expected mid afternoon today. We'll see how it goes then.

I live in a mobile home park also. I am worried about some of my elderly neighbors -- like my mid-70s, I'm not elderly!
My one neighbor just remodeled her home and has lovely things on her front porch and new sun shades. I do not see that any of this has been put away. I hope she gets through this without too much damage.
Rain is still fairly light here, but increasing. I am between Torrance and San Pedro, South LA County.

And keep your cell phone charged and if you have the little battery storage gizmo make sure it is fully charged as well.

(5,301 posts)My daughter bought me a portable charger for in my car. I can use it to inflate a low tire or charge the car battery. It has an outlet to plug in an electric light cord etc. It is usually in my trunk but I bring it into the house if we are expecting storms. Living in a rural area, power failures occur almost every year. It might be wise to get one. I not only could use it to recharge my hearing aids, I also have a smart watch that my kids got me for Mother's day after I had fallen on the deck. It can automatically call an ambulance and give them my GPS location if I ever trip over something again. So having a little charger is a really good thing for me. I love being able to answer my wrist and not have to get up to find my cell phone.

Meanwhile, my daughter's friends, life-long S. Californians, must have had a premonition, a really bad dream, no less. They up and moved from every-day lovely blue water and sunshine, Ocean City, CA, to someplace in southern Louisiana a month or so ago. Really??? Hotsy-totsy, the weather WAS just too boring there, so ,Katrina, here we come??? When the thrill wears off, they're going to be sooooo miserable.

Needless to say, she's putting that on hold for the moment, and I have been offering her all kind of preparedness advice from up here in SF! Meanwhile, my older daughter is at the CA Dem Party Executive Board meeting (she was recently elected chair of the Disability Caucus) in Visalia-- which is in the southern part of the Central Valley--and they are adjourning at 10 am today, instead of noon, because of the storm. (5,828 posts)Second, it's kinda eerie here right now...rain just lightened up and there is no wind. Weather station says my area is gonna get hit hard starting at noon today and (hopefully) ending at 2:00 p.m. today.

(2,973 posts)I'm glad the impact in your area (and my younger daughter's) was not as great as feared, but better to be prepared! I don't know if you saw this, but schools in Milwaukee (where the debate was) were cancelled again because of heat, even as those con artists on stage were denying climate change. After THIS summer! (And this WINTER in South America.) And as we've seen, these unprecedented events can become devastating very quickly, so I appreciate the caution and preparedness that preceded this event. (I mean, media will hype, but better for government and communities to err on the side of over-preparation than to be under-prepared... and perhaps the warnings to stay off the road prevented some disasters.)
Scottie Mom
(5,828 posts)The hype on TV had me scared to death that my house would be blown away. Took photos of my avocado tree...as a remembrance in case Hilary got it.

Climate change is real...it's not just a maybe...we are watching it happen.

One mile directly south (on the map) of the Griffith Observatory, were having a delightful, gentle drizzle & negligible wind. Sky is non-uniformly overcast at the moment, with dappled bright patches among the darker (but not-yet-ominous) cloud cover.
The gentle rain might help the parched earth in these parts soak up more of the deluge weve been warned is headed our way.
Weve battened down the hatches hoping well not have needed to do so.
Blessings upon one and all especially those in the way of a severe weather juggernaut!
Scottie Mom
(5,828 posts)However, no patches of sun. Rain is now getting a bit heavier. I am hoping this storm moves through and does not hit highly populated areas of the Southwest U.S. I hear reports that Las Vegas is getting hit pretty hard. Going to try and text some friends who live there.

(4,710 posts)Sure itll change, though. Rigged up a plywood ramp to deflect the water that likes to waterfall down on my balcony from a sagging rain gutter. Other than that Im set with canned food, stored water, candles, lanterns, everything charged up. Treating this as a dry run for an earthquake. As the garage is below street level, Ill be keeping an eye on the sump pump when it gets bad. If it goes Ill have to put my car up on the street somewhere. Its a 24 year-old Jag I took over since my dad died; id rather not have her in 4 feet of water!
Scottie Mom
(5,828 posts)Rain kind of stopped about 20 mins ago and it starting back up for the last few minutes.
So far, no wind. That is what worries me the most -- I really do not want to look up and see the sky instead of a ceiling!
I would take good care of a Jag like that. Hope she stays high and dry in the garage.
From what I read on the weather station, we are suppose to start getting the worst of it in at around noon today and continuing to 2:00 p.m. Have not really looked at what is up for tomorrow.
I did grocery shopping yesterday and stocked up. Have candles and bottled water. Phone is charged and so are my hearing aids. Not wearing them until I have to.
Listening to MSNBC on tune-in and they are giving reports on Hilary fairly often.
The Unmitigated Gall
(4,710 posts)Yes, blue sky straight up is not a good thing! Ive been worried our electrical grid might not hold up to super-heavy rain and maybe a boil water order too.
Ive been keeping a food supply since Covid. Standing in front of all those empty shelves I swore id never get caught flat-footed again!
Mrs. Kensington (the jag) is tucked away and so far the sump is working fine; its a big area to fill if it goes, so Ill have time.
Best to you and everyone else!
Scottie Mom
(5,828 posts)The names I use are not as elegant as your Jag, but they work for me.
Yes, the empty shelves. Yesterday, I got giant packages of paper products -- and it's only me and the Scottie in the house. Made sure I had cans of all my "go to" staples, bottled water, batteries and, of course, cookies and White Cheddar Cheese Cheez-its.
It's still a steady rain here and I, too, am worried about the loss of electricity. I only have a cell phone for communications and my hearing aids (which I need to be able to hear on the cell phone) have an electrical recharge stand.
Regards to Mrs. Kensington and may she continue to be high and dry!
The Unmitigated Gall
(4,710 posts)And sends greetings.
Also, you should look into getting a power bank. Basically, a big battery that can charge your gadgets. I have a 30,000 mAh which would charge my phone at least 5-6 times, but I see they are now selling 50,000 to 70,000 mAh power banks as well. You just charge it up and set it aside for times like this. Good for iPads, ear buds, pretty much anything you run off a usb cord.
Seem to run around $30-100 on Azamon. Theres also a Best Buy on PCH in Torrance Im sure would have them!

The weather has been crazy still here all morning. Not a breath of air movement while overcast. Really unusual for summer. I was just up in the hills a bit ago, and you can see a wall of cloud moving in from the east. Just a solid wall. It's ominous looking. We're not supposed to get any rain. However, wouldn't be too thrilled if lightning were on the menu.

(7,993 posts)South Riverside county, 17 miles inland. Light, gentle rain, no wind. Really, this was a lot less than the average winter rain we've had. The wind was imperceptible, so much so that it was like being in a movie where they show being in the eye of a hurricane, except there wasn't one. Very still. I could have had a plastic dome over me.
