I remember a few days between 99 and 101 with very high humidity in the 50s, but almost none since then. And no A/C back then. I remember watching My Little Margie on someone's TV around 1952, when I was 7, when it was this hot.

Yes, it was 79% humidity. An index chart doesn't exist that shows that heat feel number. Probably in the mid 140s

back in 1995? It was shocking, at the time. (I remember the day because I flew home to California that morning, and it was very hot when we stepped out of the hotel.) Edited to add date and number of deaths: 739 over 5 days.)

Fortunately, that day was cloudy and cooler, and then there was rain. That was better than the heat.

I arrived at the Medical Examiner's office at 2121 W. Harrison in Chicago and the parking lot was full of trucks of dead people. Normally the trucks were used for meat storage while transporting to stores. The smell was intense even in the outside air. Bodies everywhere inside.

99 degrees. Heat Index 114.

The cats are melting all over the house... most taking refuge in my bedroom which I keep cool. Unfortunately, the back of the house with the family room (where hubs and I spend most of our time) does not have AC. When it gets too much, I head for the bedroom with the all the four legged critters (who seem to have more sense than their 2-legged "masters!&quot

I dread the gas and electric bill this month. I just hope my SS check will handle it, and still allow enough for Fancy Feast and a little food for us.

Be careful out there! Just a note... if you have older neighbors, check in on them. My hubby is 72, and absolutely does not feel the heat. He thinks he's just fine. We've had more than a few words as I pull him towards the front of the house where it's cooler. Older people may not feel the heat and its effects as easily as other people might. But like I tell him... it still makes you prey for a stroke or heart attack!

Also AC, but it gets warm in here with the sun shining in. Now that the sun is almost gone, it's getting more comfortable.

Thanks for the suggestions.

>>> Raymond noted that people die of heat stress at wet-bulb temperatures much lower than 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 degrees Celsius). For example, the wet-bulb temperature during the June 2021 Pacific Northwest heatwave was closer to 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius).

which is when I went into the military.

Spent roughly 5 years in College Station TX, where 100 degree days were nothing newsworthy.

When I got back to northern IL, I about froze during 'good sleeping weather' when in summer the windows stayed open overnight for lows in the mid to high 50's.

Where I am, the temperature has been under 100 4 times since 8 July, and the heat index being 105 or higher has been a day ending in Y for all of it.

Our low temperature hasn't been under 75 since 23 June.

98 would be a welcome change for us.
