A Win for Cassandra!

I was just informed that Pittsburgh Hospital has found a liver for my grand daughter Cassandra. The transplant will begin at 2 am, a surgery that will last 12-18 hours. According to the surgeons, the donor is a perfect match. My son and daughter-in-law are racing to Pittsburgh as I write this.

Thanks in advance for the prayers, good wishes and those of you who donated to Cassandra's GoFundMe appeal. The DU family is part of this.

Sometimes these things fall apart because there is something wrong with the liver that makes it incompatible. Crossing my fingers that everything is a go!

But you're right. Without a full examination by Cassandra's surgical team, the organ is still in limbo status. It happened to my brother-in-law's first lung donation; the surgeon discovered the beginnings of pneumonia and rejected the first organ on the spot. My brother-in-law waited another month.

We shall see.

Thanks for the note and reminding me of the question.

I worry more for my son and daughter-in-law. This has taken a real toll on them. I don't know how my daughter-in-law keeps standing. But she does. And my son keeps on keeping on although right now he's a nervous wreck.

Gotta hope for the best. What else can we do?

Thanks for reaching out.

Thank you. It did happen quickly. The insurance company dragged their feet for nearly two weeks, only to then say no for the second time regarding Cassandra's continued care. The day before we left for vacation, the insurance company reversed the decision and she was officially put on the donor's list. That was August 11th, a little over 2 weeks ago. So, even with the back and forth arguing we didn't lose too much time.

Fingers and toes crossed! Thanks for the note.

But I was also concerned about my husband's worsening health conditions. Our kids are here, the baby's here and a number of old friends still live in the area. Talked to a friend just the other day, someone I went to Kindergarten with. We spent half the conversation talking about school friends and the other half talking about what a horror Donald Trump is. She lives in Jersey, not far from where I grew up. She's surrounded by MAGA's in her neighborhood and never, ever talks politics. Think she was delighted to have a sympathetic sounding board.

Once you reach a certain age, there's a certain comfort in having the familiar around you--old haunts, old friends and family members.

As for Tennessee? Once we moved, I never looked back. I was more than ready to say goodbye.

what he needs to stay well in PA. It seems like such an excellent move all around.

And to be able to talk to an old friend from kindergarten well that's phenomenal! I don't have anybody in life outside the internet to talk to as much as I'd like about what's going in our country anymore. That sailed when my sister passed Dec 26, 2019. We were on the same page and have in depth conversations over the phone.. she having been in California.

Notice I hang out on DU a lot.

As for sisters? I know where you're coming from. I miss my sister, too. Still can't believe she's gone. She was my baby sister, btw; it was just the two of us. She died in January 2020 just before Covid took over the country.

Life has a strange habit of throwing us curveballs.

Take care.

Mary's Memorial in Los Angelis was in Jan 2020 & when I got back to Kauai..COVID was, of course, gearing up to hit.

In retrospect we were wondering if Mary had gotten an early case.. she had been in a Rehab for a long time and then suddenly she passed away from pneumonia. I was talking constantly with her until the last day.

You can imagine the shock.

You take care, too.

It will give everyone a chance to see the face you're now directing your prayers and good wishes to, the face that hopefully will shine for many days and years to come. This has been an absolute roller coaster ride for my son and daughter-in-law but they've held strong.

Can't tell you how much I appreciate the outreach and support. Means so much to me and my family. In fact at the end of things, it means everything.

As I said on the first round: you guys rock!

I'll keep you posted on the outcome. Thanks again!
