Mica (FL) likely to lose transportation committee post
I have mixed feelings. He would be very open to a federal roadworks project, but the last time federal money came into town, it opened the door to massive corruption.
Mica likely to lose transportation committee post
WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. John Mica, newly elected to his 11th term in Congress, is fighting this week to keep his place within the Republican leadership -- even though the Winter Park legislator is unlikely to stay atop the powerful House transportation committee.
Mica has been senior Republican on that committee for six years and chairman for the past two -- which is the maximum allowed under rules adopted by Republicans nearly two decades ago.
The post has enabled Mica to steer more than $300 million in federal dollars to Central Florida for the SunRail commuter line while also enabling him to pass legislation that allows new toll lanes on Interstate-4.
But when Republicans decide this month whom they want to lead House committees next year, it's expected that Mica will be required to relinquish the transportation gavel -- despite the decision this week by GOP leaders that U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney's running mate, can remain as House budget chair in spite of the six-year limit.
