Bera ousts GOP Rep. Dan Lungren in California U.S. Congress District 7 race
15 November 2012

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Republican Rep. Dan Lungren has lost his re-election bid to Democratic challenger Ami Bera in one of California's most hotly contested congressional contests.

Voters from the Sacramento suburbs ousted the veteran lawmaker in the race for the state's newly redrawn 7th Congressional District. This was the second attempt for Bera, a 45-year-old physician who failed to unseat Lungren two years ago.

The Associated Press called the race for Bera on Thursday. He defeated Lungren 51.1 percent to 48.9 percent.

Bera's win adds to Democratic gains in California's congressional races. The state's majority party benefited from an independent redistricting process that was in full effect for the first time this year.

Before the Nov. 6 election, California's congressional delegation had 33 Democrats, 19 Republicans and one vacancy in a Democratic district.

it had been very weirdly gerrymandered for quite awhile until the independent commission changed it recently. formerly, it included much of the rural (read: conservative) foothills. the commission redrew it to cut them out and included a large swath of multicultural elk grove. bingo, all sorted out! i cannot stand lungren, such a cockroach.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner; was working last night.

I just moved to the area a few months ago and even now I'm not in that district, but the redistricting is what I've been told. Lungren's home area of "Gold River" is one of the rich, exclusive, inconvenient to get to, and very conservative areas of the county. My understanding is that is where his sole district office is. Nothing like being available to his constituents, eh?

His Wiki bio is enlightening, too -- "one of Newt Gingrich's chief lieutenants." Says pretty much all we need to know about this creep.

Lungren concedes in race against Bera

GOP Rep. Dan Lungren conceded defeat today in his tight race for Congress against Democratic challenger Ami Bera.

"I am satisfied that enough votes have been counted to determine that I will not be representing the citizens of the 7th Congressional District during the 113th Congress. It was a tough campaign and I accept the outcome," Lungren wrote in a statement.

It continued:

"I congratulate Dr. Bera in his victory and I wish him well as he accepts this new challenge. It is my hope that Dr. Bera approaches Congress, as have I, with a humble heart, respect for the institution and a desire to perform his duties in the best interest of the people he represents and the country."

The latest results for the 7th Congressional District showed Bera with 51.11 percent of the vote and Lungren with 48.89 percent. The race has been watched nationwide because it was so competitive and expensive.

With votes still being counted, the Associated Press called the race for Bera Thursday but Lungren waited to concede.

Lungren's defeat comes after a long career in politics marked by both wins and losses. Lungren, 66, won a race against Bera in 2010 and has represented the Sacramento region in Congress since January 2005. He represented a Southern California district for a decade in the late 1970s and 1980s. In the 1990s, he served eight years as California's Attorney General, then lost a bid for governor in 1998.
