The Other Side Of That Victory Hug

from Julia Turner at Slate:

The Other Side of That Victory Hug: A New Photo Shows How Michelle Liked It

When Barack Obama won re-election, his campaign tweeted out a photo of him and Michelle hugging, along with the phrase “Four more years.” The image quickly went viral, breaking records on Twitter and Facebook, and last week Behold spoke to campaign photographer Scout Tufankjian about how she got that shot.

Tufankjian wasn’t the only one shooting at that August rally in Iowa. Photographer David Burnett was there too, shooting for People, and when the now-famous hug took place, he was standing on the far edge of the stage, opposite where Tufankjian was located. He snapped a photo that shows us the other side of the first couple’s embrace. (Luckily, Michelle looks just as happy as her husband to be seeing her spouse for the first time in a few days.)

. . . Burnett notes the serendipity of his shot: “Most often there are situations where photographers are standing almost next to each other, and one gets the picture, and the others don't. And even in places where there is a limit to how much running around you can do to find the best angle, there will be places, moments where ‘the picture’ happens and no one at the time is aware of it. … You need that combination of vision, reaction, and intuition to anticipate what might happen and how it will look. Therein lies both the joy and the sorrow.”

“One other note on this picture,” Burnett adds. “There were something like 10,000 people present at the rally, but it seems there is always the possibility of a picture which, while taken in the middle of a small town, looks as quiet and removed as if it were alone in the desert. That's the magic of photography, finding those telling moments amid the tumult.”

I am ready to see pics of him and family enjoying Hawaii over the holidays, with lots of friends and family!

I usually do not fawn, am pretty realistic, but, I LOVE THIS COUPLE and am so grateful they are the 1st couple, and frankly astonished I should be so fortunate!

Bruce Springsteen has been known to lose 5 pounds during a performance. Probably just water, but still.

I thought on the day Obama was in Nevada - 4th state visited THAT DAY - that he was outpacing most rock stars in his "ALL NIGHTER" moves.

Then pics of him out with people in that SANDY mess show his pants are really baggy too. He's giving a whole lot of himself and he's gotta slow down just a bit or start drinking "sports shakes" to keep himself from disappearing completely.

People who love each other and care for others in kind.

Pres Obama is not kidding when supporters say "I love you!" and he says "I love you back!"

Thanks for the Other Side Story of this most popular Tweet, bigtree~

This will go down in the history books

Our once-and-future President and First Lady. I'm already wondering what she's going to wear to the Inaugural Balls. What a great couple! They do indeed make me proud! America's First Couple. That's the face of American couples - to the world. I'm proud that they represent us to the rest of the world. Honest love and companionship, brains and heart, compassion and gentility, dedication and quiet strength, elegance and true class. And aside from the love, they look like they actually seem to like each other.

Glad you're here! Let's have their backs. There's so much to do and so much still to fix in the next four years.

It's not a 'where' ... it's a 'with.' They are visibly AT HOME in the embrace of the other. It's visible and apparent that the comfort they find in each other causes those tiny aches and pains to evaporate, that tension in the stomach disappears, the air smells fresher and fills the lungs better... and ... just for a moment or two ... the rest of the world doesn't matter ... because everything is here ... and now.

It can't be faked.
It can't be bottled.
It's the closest thing to 'magic' anyone has ever found.

I love the First Family.

It would have ripped my heart out to see them leave in January if Romney had 'won'.

I think it'll rip my heart out when it happens in four years.
