Those were the headlines this past summer while the drought caused a projected increase in dairy and produce costs. Counting on a case of mass Romnesia, we now see every company that depends on such commodities blaming their workers and Obamacare for price increases.
The retail cost of Starbucks, Papa Johns, Dairy Queen, Dennys, and others are now seeing overhead increases in perfect sync with the summer forecast of shortages. Instead of blaming the free market and climate change caused by corporate America, the CEOs who see a need to raise prices are blaming who else? ...Their employees and Obamacare.
Customers may not see the price increase at all. Companies look for other things to cut when milk goes up. Starbucks, for instance, may trim fuel costs or packaging instead of charging more for a latte. I talked to a spokesman, Tim McIntyre, at one company that relies on dairy: Domino's Pizza.
"Cheese is a very important part of the consumer experience," he says. "Americans love cheese."
He says cheese is about 40 percent of the cost of a Domino's pizza. The company uses about 200 million pounds a year, and that's just on pizza -- nevermind their stuffed cheesy bread, or pasta dishes with cheese. Using less cheese is not the answer to rising milk prices.

(47,675 posts)The next closest one we have doesn't deliver (but does make great pizza) so it's cheaper to send one of my daughters out to fetch it and I tip HER. I like to make my own - whole wheat crust on a cast-iron pizza pan (low-lip) with all the goodies we want. Good shit, Maynard.
