A little blue collar psychology

The hate spewing from the right wing has some psychological and sociological components. Eric Hoffer explained in The True Believer how he thought it might work. The book was published in 1951, and Hoffer died in 1983, so he did not live to see the hate machine go into overdrive.

The haters have always been among us (e.g., the Birchers I worked with in the 60's), but it seems now that they think there's a chance they can take over.

"In the eyes of the true believer, people who have no holy cause are without backbone and character–a pushover for men of faith. On the other hand, the true believers of various hues, though they view each other with mortal hatred and are ready to fly at each other’s throat, recognize and respect each other’s strength." (p. 147)

"Hatred is the most accessible and comprehensive of all unifying agents." (p.85)

Well, the hate struck out in 2008 and 2012....we need to put it to rest for good in 2014. RagAss Nov 2012 #1
