Denny's in Fredricksburg Texas

Talked to my Mom tonight. She told me a story about her and my Dad stopping into Dennys for a meal last week.

Apparently inside the lobby is that claw game, use the claw to get a toy for a buck or whatever. It was mostly empty but inside it was a doll of Romney and another of Obama. However the one with Obama had a watermelon next to it, which really pissed my Mom off.

So when she went to pay her bill, she asked the girl if that machine was operated by a third party who paid for the space, or if it was run by the restaurant. She said the girl looked over her shoulder and looked back at her saying nothing. Mom then told her she thought the watermelon setup was racist and offensive. The girl replied (I'm paraphrasing) "Don't you talk to me about Obama, I served my country and that man is not fit to be Commander in Chief."

Mom, who gets flustered easily, said little and left. She later called the corporate office to file an official complaint. I knew she didn't take a photo, because she's 76 and barely even knows where her cell phone is much less know how to use it, but I kept saying "Damn I wish you had taken a picture of that!!!!" I would have loved to send that to a few different websites.

Can you believe that shit? A store that has a history of lawsuits for racial discrimination had openly displayed an Obama doll with a racist theme and then was absolutely unapologetic about it when a customer complained. Somebody should be fired for that.

Fuckin' Texas.

six weeks ago and I didn't see that particular machine. However, the wait staff, cashier, and cook were all having a mighty laugh and gab fest over some printed Obama-hating jokes a customer at an adjacent table brought in and shared with them.

I was livid as was the person I was there with and we had already placed our order. Just as our waiter was bringing our order out of the kitchen my companion and me got up and headed for the door because I felt if I stayed much longer I was going to end up with my ass whooped or in jail. The waiter asked where we were going and I told him I was in town for the green living festival and we weren't going to sit and listen to the staff laugh at racial jokes about our president nor was I going to listen to the vile remarks made by them. I also promised to report them to their management.

As I heading out the door I turned and said that we would be cancelling out two of their votes for Romney by supporting President Obama a second time. I didn't see who said it but someone called out "Fuck you and fuck Obama!" as the door closed behind me.

wasn't there. I called the next day, Sunday, but the manager was "unavailable". I got busy after that and pretty much didn't think about it again until this OP reminded me about it.

I got the impression, and especially after reading the OP, that the behavior I witnessed that late Saturday night was typical for that establishment and that whoever manages (or owns) it probably engages in such speech.

Wish now that I had followed through and been more aggressive in pursuing upper management because maybe I could have had something to do with the story in the OP not happening.

You called their corporate office to complain. Sounds like that particular store is run by a bunch of bigots.

down that path? Really, Fuckin' Texas? It's not just Texas where this is going on, it's everywhere. Obama haters are legion, from sea to shining sea. I wish all of this individual state bashing would cease and call out the idiots that live there instead. Bash the haters, not the state. While I agree that Texas is full of haters and bigots, we have plenty of blue counties in the Lone Star state.

Anyway, good on your mom for taking a stand.

I would have done things a tad different. Not only would I not have a meal there, after making a point of complaining, not to the cashier, the manager on duty, but next would have been calling the corporate office and let them know WHY THEY LOST MY BUSINESS.

As to firing, it could be as simple as that Dennys having a problem, and not the chain. Why I would have taken both steps. Oh and yes, I know how to use my phone, so photo would be taken.
