If you raise the age of eligibility the GOP figures it wins in two ways. One is seniors die early because they did not get the benefits to keep them alive longer. Two is that many will die off even before they qualify. That is one way to get rid of all the moochers. Why not go to 80 or 90?

Concerning raising the age. The last time the age was raised the voter stamp of approval was comprised mostly of people and retirees who were not affected. Now I don't believe the longevity argument (really think it is a scam). However, I do believe that any decision about raising this age should be a discussion among the people affected this time.
For right now, it is imperative that entitlements not be part of any grand bargain. Social Security has nothing to do with the deficit.

(31,182 posts)First, it was a gimmick for the gops to eject the Democratic majority in 1994. It worked.
After that, the legislature was not only right wing, but it was also incompetent. They had lost the "institutional memory" of government. They also sent up a bunch of idealogues who didn't know shit about civics or current events. The results were horrible.

Instead, why not remove the cap of paying into the program? THAT would help keep social security solvent!
Since African-Americans live, on average, up to 67.5 years, raising the age of eligibility would guarantee the majority in the African-American community will be robbed of their chance to collect on what they worked so hard for. I'm guessing this is why the almost exclusively white Grand Old Pricks Party want to do this. They have been trying to make all Americans pay taxes and FICA, but at the same time, keep the earned benefits exclusively for the White race. I'm sure their racist Lemmings are all gung-ho about this since they loathe people of color and they really hate the thought that minorities are making use of our social safety net, so this kind of thinking fits perfectly in their view of a privileged white race over all others.

(15,438 posts)that social security will be there when I finally retire at 65. There is ZERO reason for raising the eligibility age because there's over $200 BILLION dollars in the social security "earnings suspense file", thanks to undocumented workers who pay into the program but who will never see a dime of it because the social security number they used is not theirs.
See the chart on the right here:

Is it any wonder, then, why Republicans - and some Democrats - aren't as quick to offer amnesty to undocumented workers? To these politicians, that fat social security pot will ensure they can dip into it for their masters at the MIC from where they get a whole lot of goodies in the form of campaign cash and under-the-table tens of thousands.
