I hate Rush Limbaugh. He is a pathetic human...obnoxious, liar, hateful, full of bullshit. He has no regard for his actions. I'm happy to see him losing both audience and revenue. It must be killing his huge ego.
HOWEVER, I used to work in radio. I have a lot of friends who still work in radio. When Rush fails...guess who gets punished? Not Rush. The fallout comes from the average Joe and Jane working at radio stations. Clear Channel has been quietly terminating people again here at the end of 2012 as well as Cumulus Broadcasting. I know firsthand a handful of people in one market who have been recently "let-go" citing dropping revenues at the radio cluster level. The folks I know understand that half of that lost revenue was from their conservative talk station. One was a local producer, one was a front office worker scheduling commercials, one was an assistant engineer, and one was a part-time newsroom person. Now they have no job. Rush still has his job.

(2,921 posts)then they have to fire Rush. No question about it.
His contract is way too much for the radio to handle - their revenues would not meet FatBoi's needs.
If the radios wants to make money - then start putting lefties on the radio again. And fire Rush again. Fire him until he is nothing but a pathetic mewling fatass.

(51,076 posts)were let go because of contract talks. Best I can figure from what they said is they were asked to take a huge pay cut.

(4,840 posts)Did they speak out against Limbaugh before this? I think the take away lesson here is employees should speak out or at least prepare to leave early when stations promote hosts whose divisive and controversial language may ultimately risk their job security. It's like any faulty product. The writing is on the wall.

(45,319 posts)The thing is, folks who decided that it is 'ok' to make a living aiding destructive broadcasting had no qualms saying 'this is what sells, what can I do' when they wanted the pay. Now if it does not sell, are they claiming that folks need to buy it anyway just to pay for their new car? What happened to 'the market dictates these things'?
Non Union shops. Stuck on an outdated format, replacing innovation with imitation.
I mean, by not watching any program, you are in essence voting that those employed there become unemployed. DUers like to say Americans are addicted to American Idol. The show employs hundreds, gives a spotlight to peope who do not have family connections to such things. But it sucks, so no one has qualms criticizing it. Why should Rush not be treated the same?
Do you worry deeply about the fate of the Nugent road crew as well? About the staff at the Ann Coulter publishers? Do you buy Ann's books to keep those poor, abused folks employed?
They work for a product that is no longer popular. That, as they say, is show biz.

(57,936 posts)Limbaugh. I'm sorry for the people who lose their jobs, but the stations should hire a wider variety of talk show hosts -- with different opinions.
Local liberal talk show hosts have also lost their shows. Seems to me that it is a problem with the advertisers that isn't just about Limbaugh. Advertisers should support a balance of talk show hosts and not use their support as a vehicle for expressing their political opinions or preferences.
The advertisers need to wake up. Liberals deserve more of a voice on the radio. The conservative era is over.
