"SNIP............
G. Elliott Morris: I have become a little obsessed tonight about what we should be expecting Trump to hit in this primary a priori. That is, given Trump is assumed to be the eventual party nominee and almost universally liked in the GOP, should he be winning more than 60 percent in South Carolina?
Josh Marshall: Im not going to speculate what it means for the general election. But this is a lot of persistent opposition for a candidate who has always been running as a de facto incumbent. Even if you set that de facto incumbency aside, its quite a lot for a candidate who is, whatever technicalities you want to get caught up in, the presumptive nominee. 40% of Republican primary voters are still showing up to say they dont want Trump even when they know theyre definitely going to get him.

(5,959 posts)He was already president with high name recognition and a track record with republicans.
Why he isnt getting support in the 90s instead of the 50s, shows how lacking and sad his candidacy is.

(32,738 posts)Biden is not running against any serious candidate. Trump is not an incumbent and is running against serious candidates. Not the same.

(16,540 posts)The equivalent would be Biden losing in 2024, and running again in 2028. 60% for someone who lost the previous Presidency isn't terrible. If Bush lost in 2004 (Ohio would do the trick), do you think he would have gotten 60%? I doubt it.
