I had a bit of guilt when I realized my first counseling session is tonight. But then I remembered that just like drugs, the first one is free. Dodged that one!

(15,555 posts)Every day is buy nothing day, not that I'm complaining since I have a nice roof over my head and enough food not to be hungry. Besides, I have just enough and have no desire to own any more crap, especially crap made in China.
Even if I had money, I sure as hell wouldn't be out shopping today. I avoid stores as much as I can this time of year except for groceries.
dixiegrrrrl
(60,010 posts)we have all the essentials the house needs, plus the bills go down compared to the expenses of working.
Plus, as you say, "crap from China" is not tempting, we focus on getting good old American stuff, 2nd hand.

(15,555 posts)I've just retired in July and can't believe how much money I save just by not having to fill up the gas tank every week or buy work clothes which I seldom did anyway. I told a friend that I only have to fill my gas tank about once a month now and she was so envious.

This is a buy nothing day. Or we have done the alternative ... Head for Main Street local shops and support their businesses. They don't have "deals," but they have friendly people and a relaxed atmosphere. Big box stores rarely see me ... Especially on Black Friday.

Other than that, not buying anything I wouldn't normally buy: coffee and black cohosh (damn hot flashes!) from small, local businesses, and dinner/entertainment tonight at a small, local restaurant/music club owned by long-time friends. We normally avoid the big box stores as much as possible, and never shop on the big days, so it's not unlike any other day.

(6,292 posts)But...... I was picking produce with a crew of women who pick produce for a living. They work outside 10 hr days 6 days a week and make minimum wage. The thing they look forward to all year long is this Black Friday thing. They do the camp out in the parking lots- everything! They see it a big fun sport and they buy a few things for family that normally they cannot afford with their low wages that they work so hard for.
And so I need to temper my rush to conclusions about who or why people participate in this blood sport.

(3,445 posts)I had a friend who used to come into town for the weekend, and we would go shopping and see a movie or two. He's long gone now, and it's never had the same appeal since then. I live two blocks from a major shopping center, and less than a mile from a major shopping district up May Avenue, so the traffic is horrid to try to get almost anywhere. Plus the fact that now it seems to be literally taking your life into your hands to go out, so I just stay at home. I've been off all week, cleaning house and trying to get over a lousy cold, so I'm content to just be here with the dog, enjoying my time off. I'm already dreading going back to work on Monday....

I should say every politician makes mistakes, and they should be pointed out, whatever party you are on, but making every one of your life's actions adhere to the ever-changing policies of any one political party is not very healthy.

And while I don't personally like pot, I'm offended at the criminalization of drugs overall, so I'm hoping this pebble starts an avalanche and buries the drug war.
And as an aside, we also legalized same sex marriage. I had a colleague who was genuinely confused that I, not being gay, would vote for the referendum. I have to admit I'm confused by her confusion.

(36,533 posts)I don't recall exactly, but it was many years ago we had some anti-gay bill pass that ended up being controversial. Also, more than once, we've had fetal rights bills on our ballots. They tried to get one this year, but didn't have enough sigs.
I don't know how the various states have set up their medical marijuana programs, but I've heard Colorado's is a good model.
The legalization of weed & equal rights for our LGBT community are coming! I did not think I would see this much success on the war on a leaf, in my lifetime, so I am feeling slightly positive.
As for your colleague, that is just narrow minded thinking.

(39,909 posts)...but everyday is Buy Nothing NEW Day since we moved to The Woods and went On Strike in 2006.
We buy or barter for 2nd Hand or salvage, directly from the previous owner wherever possible, and make it work,
or do without.
We produce a good percentage of our own food (HoneyBees, Chickens, Berries, Fruit Trees and a BIG Veggie Garden),
and do all building & labor ourselves mostly with hand tools.
What we can't produce ourselves, we buy in bulk and cook from scratch.
We are current developing a local Co-Op with a few neighbors to increase our bulk buying capabilities.
We are still On the Corporate Hook for ISP, Phone, TV, and energy,
but are steadily reducing those dependencies.
Our motto is:
Next Year, we will !CONSUME! Less!
So far, so good,
but this lifestyle is not for everybody.
My Wife & I very fortunate to be healthy and strong,
and have a good set of complimentary skills that make this fun (most of the time).
Today was no different from most other days as far as our buying & spending behavior is concerned.
You are reclaiming the title of citizen instead of consumer. I'm trying to as well. I buy everything at thrift stores.
