The death earlier this month of Foremost Group CEO Angela Chao, the sister-in-law of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, is currently under "criminal investigation," a Texas sheriff's office said Thursday.
Chao, 50, was found dead shortly after midnight on Feb. 11 after being pulled out of a car that had gone into a pond on a private ranch in Johnson City, Texas, about 40 miles from Austin.
"This incident was not a typical accident," the Blanco County Sheriff's Office wrote in a letter to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Thursday.
"Although the preliminary investigation indicated this was an unfortunate accident, the Sheriff's Office is still investigating this accident as a criminal matter until they have sufficient evidence to rule out criminal activity," the letter said.
Chao was the sister of McConnell's wife, Elaine Chao, who has served as secretary of both the U.S. Labor and Transportation departments. Their father and mother founded the Foremost Group.

(25,556 posts)It's one of those things: How large was the property? Where was the pond? How was the lighting? How familiar was she with the area? How often did they visit? (I know. I know. I know. her husband's corporation is a partial owner, but in Texas ponds come and go depending on weather. Sounds like the corporation purchased the property in 2020 ..etc Lifestyles of the rich and famous) How much was she drinking? etc etc.
Don't know where the property stops and starts etc Was it the ponds near the house or were they creek ponds?
Edit: According to weather underground...It rained .96 inches on Saturday morning. She was found just after midnight on Sunday.

Angela Chao died on February 11, 2024, at the age of 50. According to the Blanco County sheriff, she died after her Tesla went into a pond on her private ranch (named JWCB Ranch, or JW Ranch for short), which is located at 101 Schneider Lane in Johnson City, about 40 miles west of Austin. She was under water for over an hour as rescuers tried to reach her and extricate her from the submerged car. Upon her removal from the car, EMS workers delivered "advanced life support" for 43 minutes, but were unable to revive her. As of February 2024, her death was under criminal investigation by the Blanco County Sheriffs Office.

It has nothing to do with the motor other than the latches are streamlined to theoretically increase range.

(25,556 posts)Now, the question: How often did they visit? (I know. I know...lifestyles of the rich and famous..they may have been infrequent visitors). Was she intoxicated? How was the lighting? Ponds in Texas are often temporary and their size is quite variable. (It had rained about four inches in January and that's enough to fill a pond) Last year, there likely weren't any ponds.
If they don't visit the property frequently and as you can see, it's a bunch of dirt road and it was midnight, it's easy to end up in a pond if there is no lighting.
To me, I just don't see how a crime was actually committed.

pinkstarburst
(1,327 posts)in a very rural area like Johnson City, it's not going to be well lit up like the interstate. There would have been flooding due to rain earlier that day and she could easily misjudged water levels and been swept away or driven into the water without realizing what she was doing and that could have happened in an instant.
I'm sure they're investigating because they need to, but it wouldn't surprise me if this was just a tragic accident.

(70,306 posts)Time will tell--hopefully.
...........The letter did not say that there was evidence that Chao died as the result of a crime.
But the statement in the letter that Chaos death was not a typical accident and the prospect of a potential prosecution marked a shift from an initial statement released days after Chaos death.
The sheriffs office in that Feb. 16 statement had said, EMS attempted emergency measures on Ms. Chao but she succumbed from being under the water.
Our preliminary investigation has determined this to be an unfortunate accident. The investigation is ongoing at this time, the prior statement said.

(32,767 posts)... how does a submerged driver operate the electric car windows?
I've never driven a Tesla, but my gas-powered car also has electric-powered windows. Once the motor shuts off, my car windows don't work. I'd assume it's the same for a Tesla?
Long story short - a submerged driver can operate old-style roll down windows and exit the car if they've driven into a pond. But electric windows make it impossible to save oneself.

(25,556 posts)It's in a flash flood area where pond size and even the pond itself tend to be more or less temporary.
It had rained almost inch earlier in the day.
This is enough to cause hazardous conditions on dirt roads in the hill country.
I'm pretty sure there is little lighting and if she accidentally backed into an area and didn't see that the pond had risen or drove into area and thought the swollen pond was a puddle, it's entirely possible. These things happen in the Texas Hill Country quite frequently.
