One would think they can't get better jobs or they would be elsewhere.

Sometimes you take what you can get because there is no other option. We must remember that Wal Mart has been a factor in not only the destruction of main street, but in the loss of manufacturing jobs as it requires cheaper and cheaper pricing from it's suppliers forcing them to reduce labor costs and off shore their production, so that they could create an environment of predatory pricing to eliminate their local competition. Once those local pharmacies, grocers, small stores are gone, where are people to shop or work?

It's not Walmart, it's the general advantage we give to big businesses, making the tax code so difficult to navigate that only the largest can take advantage, making it all but impossible for small businesses to get decent affordable healthcare...

I hear Dodd Frank is 400 pieces of regulation. How is the small community bank supposed to keep up with that?

The expertise needed by the poor soul trying to start and run a small enterprise is mind boggling. It doesn't even need Walmart to make it hard.

I owned a small business for over 30 years. Employed from 9 to 15 people. It's not that hard.
I did everything myself except the year-end taxes. I'd say a few hours a month is all that is needed.
If a small business can't deal with that, then they shouldn't be in business in the first place.

But getting to that level isn't instantaneous, you have to learn and research it first.

I kept the books, paid the salaries, and did the quarterly tax reporting along with other things, like advertising etc. I even did the year end tax work involving W-2/W-3 and 1099/1096 reporting. We only needed an accountant to do the year end tax reporting for the business. I am sure there are more complex businesses issue for some companies than the one I worked for, but I would guess most "small businesses" are pretty much like the one I worked for.

it's not that difficult and the only research I ever did was go to the IRS website. It's a great resource.

as well as working within the industry's trade association made up of many small businesses, so I have some understanding of how small business works and the challenges they face.

As a niche Retailer I did and did not directly compete with Wal Mart depending up the product, so I get that too. I was fortunate in that my business was esoteric enough to have been far off the Wal Mart Radar Screen.

That said Wal Mart has put many a small business out of business through predatory pricing and as I stated earlier, forced many to off-shore jobs just to maintain shelf space within the Wal Mart chain. When those jobs disappear in Retail, Distribution or Manufacturing it becomes difficult to find a replacement.

I wonder if that is included also. If not it should be. I thought that the EIC was introduced so big business did not have to raise wages for the poor.

in the beginning for their utility hook-ups and roads, etc.... as well as their empty buildings they leave behind when morphing into a Superstore. Our Country would be much better off if Walfart had to pay their own way.
