SAXBY CHAMBLISS IS BREAKING WITH GROVER NORQUIST TO MAKE IT EASIER TO CUT SOCIAL SECURITY

. . . Here’s why. For more than a year, Chambliss has been involved with a group of senators who support the Bowles-Simpson plan to cut Social Security and Medicare benefits while lowering the corporate tax rate. This Bowles-Simpson plan closes a few token tax loopholes, and also reduces the popular mortgage interest deduction. Norquist is opposed to closing even the tiny loopholes that the Bowles-Simpson plan closes, so he staunchly opposes the plan altogether — which also means opposing Chambliss.

Chambliss is willing to deal with closing small loopholes in the tax code in order to get to the wider goals of the Bowles-Simpson plan: cutting Social Security benefits by raising the retirement age, cutting Medicare benefits by capping overall spending, and dramatically lowering corporate tax rates.

The Senator is likely trying to curry favor with Democrats in order to pass such a plan. Publicly denouncing Norquist is one way to do that. Some in the press have suggested that his feud with Norquist could cause him to lose his seat. But corporate lobbyists are huge fans of the Bowles-Simpson plan, and if Chambliss can get it passed, then he’ll have all the money he needs to be re-elected in 2014.

It uses energy unnecessarily. We progressive types must be the first line of living in reality. Forget "it ain't never gonna happen," it would be symbolic at best. Look at the number of millionaires in congress. It wouldn't matter shit to the miniromneys.

How about tying their pay to their individual productivity??

Elect me, and I could draw that salary while doing absolutely everything to block legislation, too!

willing to campaign in Georgia on raising the age for Social Security? Does he really think that will fly in Georgia? Does he really think his constituents nearing retirement age, are willing to wait longer, so he can protect the rich people like him? Go for it then, and don't hide behind it. I wonder how dumb the constituents are in Georgia?

This is our country, not their country.

We should not be waiting on the most greedy, moronic, sociopathic among us to make decisions on behalf of all of us.

Half a Billion for Drones to Spy on US? WE should tell politicians where the $$ cuts will be made

I usually consider the source, and prefer a more credible outlet than a blog, but if it quacks like a duck it must be a duck, and if it's a republican he must be trying to screw the working class out of something behind our backs.

K&R for the rude awakening.

I tell you if Obama sells us out I know for sure I won't vote in the next election. Because there will be no differences between the parties. Wheter we get cuts by a million or a thousand the dems will have broken the promises why they were elected. You bet I will let them know. If we all let them know what will happen I think they will get the picture.

I can't stand it that if GOP agree to raise taxes on the Top 2% THEY are making some kind of concession that REQUIRES Democrats to kick the poor and middle class in the teeth.

The majority of Americans want GOP and DEM to raise taxes at the top. And BOTH PARTIES need the millions in campaign funding from the Top 2 %.

How about instead they give the money back that they looted from our treasury.

Social Security is just fine the way it is.
