TV towers in hilly areas with steep valleys tend to be built at the highest elevations with the signal transmitted on a downward trajectory to reach people in lower elevations.

Back when OTA was pretty much it, coastal residents in Orange or Ventura counties easily picked up TV stations from LA. We couldn't have watched TV if the signal couldn't reach the valleys. Even Laguna Beach, a town literally nestled along the coast at the base of a steep hill, got OTA signal.

There’s an interesting curve to the coastline that blocks broadcast reception from Los Angeles (100 miles south) pretty well. It means the ocean is to our south, not to our west, but also various mountain formations get in the way. I moved to Goleta in 1979; hubby moved there in 1965. In ye olden days, all you could get was Channel 3 unless you had a very, very tall antenna on the roof. When I moved there it was to a rental house and I didn’t know any of this until my TV went dark — the technician grumped that someone had “hamburgered in a cable” and I’d been getting it for free, so tough luck. Now cable is just about everywhere, but geology hasn’t changed.

We moved 50 miles south to Ventura almost 7 years ago, to a cute little valley with a view of the Oxnard Plain. Our house has a glimpse of the ocean through a gap in the foothills, and the people who developed the valley 35+ years ago were affluent, so cable was a given anyway.

I suppose we could turn it off, but I have no idea how that would all work out except hubby would not be able to work from home at all. No more communication with his immediate boss in Hawai’i or the techies in India or the rest of the crew scattered all over the US. TV would be the least of it. All I know is that when we moved here I had to change my cell phone provider because otherwise I had to drive down the road to get any reception at all.

California is unbelievably mountainous, what with the mating of the tectonic plates and all — I say this for the benefit of others, as you know this.

Amazing stuff, technology. I grew up in Hawai’i, and our very expensive telephone calls off-island were made via undersea cables until the first communication satellites went up. Then the phone company moguls still charged us the old rates until they were caught.
