Biden campaign tests Trump’s name-calling strategy with ‘Broke Don’
by Alex Gangitano - 03/23/24 6:00 AM ET

President Biden’s reelection campaign has dubbed former President Trump “Broke Don,” taking a strategy out of Trump’s playbook that his political rivals know all too well.

Trump has used nicknames — from “Little Marco” to “Crooked Hillary” to “Lyin’ Ted” — to put down a variety of opponents. For much of 2020, Biden’s moniker, courtesy of Trump, was “Sleepy Joe.”

Bruce Mehlman, a former official under President George W. Bush, cited Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw to warn against such a tactic.

“George Bernard Shaw famously advised ‘never wrestle with a pig because you’ll both get dirty and the pig likes it,’” Mehlman said.

Others find Biden’s approach refreshing.

“The days of ‘when they go low we go high,’ are over. No one is saying that the president needs to jump into the mud with Trump, but it’s nice seeing him getting his hands dirty,” said Democratic strategist Michael Starr Hopkins. “Bullies don’t comprehend notions like diplomacy and niceties, they only respond when they get punched back.”

It's just mostly playground silliness.

Do you see it as strength when Trump does it?

15. It's not the US that is judging the strength. It's the MAGA cult members who find it appealing. Like watching Road ...

..... Runner cartoons.

When you are not smart enough to figure out who is protecting your healthcare, Social Security, Medicare, and the ability to retire and still have healthcare and an income, you will spend your whole life laughing at the Road Runner getting beaten every time by a bird that goes Beep! Beep! And let's not forget a former president who lies to you every time his mouth moves. And you see that as strength! Sad! Sad! Sad!

16. Trump has a thin skin. It is smart to needle him.

Trump is quite fragile and his ego is enormous.
It is easy to get under his skin and whack away at him.

I see a big difference between ribbing Trump and downright ugliness.

Biden doesn't do ugly. But he is right to fight back.

Biden's people are from western Ireland, just like mine.
We don't start fights, but by God, we will sure as hell finish them if attacked.

To him his wealth is all that matters. He doesn't care if people think he's dumb because he'll be like "I may be dumb, but at least I'm rich!". Call out his brokeness and indebtedness, and that will really get under his skin.
