So. I made an enemy this week.

Short convo with a Trumper who would not shut up at game night this week. I lasted almost 2 hours before I hit the wall and opened my mouth - asked him EXACTLY what he thinks Trump is going to do to make his personal life better. It went pretty close to this - not exact maybe, but as close as I can remember it.

He's going to make America Great again.
What does that mean?
Well he fixed the border before and will do it again.
If the border was fixed, where did the babies in cages come from? Besides you don't live at the border.
Well they take our jobs.
Are you looking for a job?
No but Americans are suffering.
Who in your family is suffering because someone came here from Mexico and took their job?
Well maybe not jobs but they take our healthcare.
What doctor refused to treat you because there are too many illegals?
(At this point he's flapping arms and getting red ears)

So I take it down a notch - look I understand you support him for reasons other than what he's going to do FOR you. Clearly you support him for what you think he'll do AGAINST people you don't like. I find that frustrating and sad.

And then I turned and walked away. I hope that blowhard avoids me forever.

I share that he can't own an NFL team because of his ties to organized crime, that's why he bought the New Jersey Generals (USFL) team and tried to sue the NFL for having a monopoly. He was trying to backdoor his way into the NFL. He ran that team and the league into the ground. He won the lawsuit but the judge awarded the USFL $1. He also can't own a casino in Vegas because of his ties to organized crime. He has a hotel there but no casino. That's why he went to Atlantic City and failed there several times.

I was helping my niece move out and leave her abusive ex. This guy is her friend who was there to help as well. When she goes in the house he tries to strike up a conversation and immediately starts talking about not believing in scientific stuff. I know this is on the path to MAGAtville.

At one point I just said, "hm, that's interesting," about him not believing in Carbon 14 dating. I mean, you don't need to argue with the dining room table. Just look quizzically and sound like you're doubting their intelligence.

He didn't get the message as next he did a humble brag about being anti-education. Thankfully, my niece showed up and I didn't have to listen to that bull crap any more. Yikes, she picks the worst men.

He thought since I was a vet I had to be a magat. I said how in the hell is that Biden's fault? He blew off on some incorrect bullshit about Biden not allowing ships to unload their cargo. Then he said I see you're a veteran and everyone in the military loves Trump. I laughed and said Google Trump and what he called fallen soldiers. He asked what did he say. I said he called them Suckers and Losers. I said it's pretty hard for a veteran to listen to that crap coming from a guy who got 5 deferments during the Vietnam war.

said we need Trump because he is a businessman and will get rid of the debt. He actually thinks Trump

28. I've come to the conclusion that MAGA is not really a political movement so much as a fandom.
Sat Mar 23, 2024, 05:13 PM
Mar 23

It's not really about a shared ideology (although Trump fans do have many shared beliefs). At its core, MAGA is a community based on fanatical devotion to Trump the celebrity and media personality.

When he was starring on The Apprentice, he acquired a fan base of admirers who believed that he really was the fantastically rich and successful businessman portrayed in that show. I strongly suspect (though I can't prove it) that his road to political success was paved by the devotion of fans who had followed that TV series and already saw him as the embodiment of success, wealth, and power before he ever held his first political rally.

Along the way, MAGA fandom grew way beyond Apprentice fandom and into a subculture held together by the sense of community and identity Trump fans acquire through their participation in it.

I really wish someone would do a serious academic study of how the public image TSF acquired through The Apprentice set him up for political success. I honestly thjnk there could be a doctoral dissertation in there for the right researcher.

When I look at MAGA through the lens of fandom, it's not that surprising to me that his fans don't share a coherent political set of political principles. They don't need one, because MAGA is not about that. I believe that's why it's so hard to reach those people through logical, well-reasoned arguments, and why it's so hard to shake their devotion to MAGA even when you can get them to see some of the contradictions.

If there was some way to get them to see that TSF is not the stong, rich, powerful hero5 they think he is, but rather a weak, sniveling coward who has lied to them and misled them over and over again, that might do the trick, but I don't see any way to accomplish that. They're too invested in believing he's their savior who is going to fight for them and get rid of everything that makes them uncomfortable, and they're too good at waving away any information they don't like as "fake news," just as he taught them to do.

They sound and act like mindless fanatics, whose main interest is getting shown on camera at the rallies. We know the fans of Smelvis don't have economic issues as an excuse for supporting him. They don't seem to have to work a regular job, they drive huge expensive trucks and SUVS, they can afford to throw away $$$ on his Made in China merch which they drape all over their bodies, they can afford to travel to his rallies in comfort and they probably own small businesses.

Nope, this country is MUCH, MUCH, an order of magnitude better now, under Biden.

And think a minute about freedom. What does that even mean? Free to get effed over by employers in a 'right to work' state? Free to die out in the parking lot if you cannot pay for healthcare? Free to be buried under a mountain of student debt?

OK, that's freedom to...what about freedom from? Freedom from...what? Old white Christian guys taking over your uterus? Oh, wait...that's the Republicans. Freedom from being around people who are different because Trump will round them up and put them in camps? Freedom from the bother of voting ever again? Freedom from clean air, clean water? Freedom from biodiversity? Freedom from peace after Putin conquers Ukraine and invades Poland? Because he will...

I guess I'm confused about how Republicans are going to make anything better for anybody but a few billionaire greed-lizards. Despicable party of treason if you ask me.

Kentucky Woman - mind if I use this? Below is another angle for Trump vets.

Surrender: Millions of former US Military members support defeat

Trump is the only President in our history to surrender during a war;
Trump ended all technical support to Afghan forces;
Trump agreed to surrender, but he also agreed to restore Afghanistan;
Trump ordered all forces out of Afghanistan before Biden was President.

I didn’t know all of this when I talked to my Vietnam vet brother. Points 1 and 4 were enough to convince him to do more research. He still won’t vote for a Democrat but is “sitting this one out.” I didn’t tell him that amounts to the same thing.😉
