“The Biden administration is pushing for a long-shot diplomatic deal in coming months that presses Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept a new commitment to Palestinian statehood in exchange for diplomatic recognition by Riyadh,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“As inducements to recognize Israel, the White House is offering Riyadh a more formal defense relationship with Washington, assistance in acquiring civil nuclear power and a renewed push for a Palestinian state—a package that U.S. officials say they are in the final stages of negotiating.”

So is Jordan, Turkey, and to a lesser degree the smaller Gulf states and Egypt.

The grave error Iran made by attacking Israel is it showed all of the Middle Eastern countries that they are (a) vulnerable to a similar attack and (b) only Israel has the military prowess to withstand it and retaliate.

It is no secret that the entire region is engulfed in the centuries-old standoff between Shia and Sunni Islamic factions. The Sunni Saudi Arabia and Jordan in particular are being surrounded and undermined by Iran's Shia proxies, who also threaten the stability of Israel, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq, all countries with sizable Sunni populations.

Saudi Arabia knows full well that only Israel can save it from collapsing under the pressure of Iran and its Houthi proxies in Yemen, which borders Saudi Arabia in the south. And, as Iran's influence grows all around it, time is quickly running out.

There is no alternative for the Saudis other than ally with Israel (and establish closer ties with the US in the process). And, Palestinian state or not, they have to do this fast.
