NYT provided something worthwhile with this I think... Though it reflects the typical layout of courtrooms, the designated seating and the degree of recess for the witness stand is a little atypical (I'd wondered why Cohen had to stand up to view and identify the defendant, but he has a partially blocked view). I had thought they'd have the SS standing up at the back and around the sides of the courtroom, but it appears they are assigned seating at least when they so choose.
Not sure why the labeling doesn't come up, but from the jury box counter clockwise, the witness box,the judge, the clerk and in the middle row, in front of jury box, the court reporter (closest to the prosecutor's table and with two rows behind them reserved for DA designates), the defense on the other side with the circle representing where TSF typically sits and two rows behind reserved for secret service and defendant/defense designates. The rest is press and spectators, though there is a part of one section not marked for the court sketch artist. There are four large monitors inside the courtroom aimed at the defendant, judge, witness, and podium for DA or defense. So, I guess inside, they all do get some view of all that is going on. Even the press inside will only get a good view of the jurors if they are seated in one of the first few rows close to them--which is likely why we don't get much "color" reporting as to how they are reacting to testimony.
Of course, the temperature of the room has had much discussion, but apparently, on day 1, Judge Merchan apologized but there are but two temps--cold or sweltering and he made clear that he was not going to tolerate a far too hot courtroom (I'm with HIM).
So, yeah. It does look pretty cramped.

(1,342 posts)While the layout was exactly the same as the one Trump is in, we had rich paneling, and deep plush carpeting. The seating was cushioned leather. In the ceiling were projected images of clouds gently floating along. Quiet, calming music played and the temperature was perfectly regulated. Next to the court reporter there was a coffee station staffed by a liveried barista. One day I saw Tommy Tuberville in the audience. Apparently he was checking in to insure that all defendants, black, brown, or white, had a comfortable experience. No wonder he was shocked and outraged by the NYC courtroom.
