(25,403 posts)MOSCOW (AP) Armed militants attacked two Orthodox churches, a synagogue and a traffic police post in Russias southern republic of Dagestan, killing a priest and six police officers, Russian state news agency RIA Novosti said Sunday.
Russias National Anti-Terrorism Committee said in a statement that a Russian Orthodox Church priest and police officers were killed in the terrorist attacks.
Dagestans Ministry of Internal Affairs said a group of armed men fired at a synagogue and a church in the city of Derbent, located on the Caspian Sea. The attackers fled and a search was underway for them, the statement from the ministry said. The ministry said two militants were eliminated.
Almost simultaneously, reports appeared about an attack on a traffic police post in the capital of the largely Muslim region, Makhachkala. According to RIA Novosti, six policemen were killed and 12 more were injured.

Every day it's either kerchief bridge has been destroyed or kyiv is going to fall or some other dramatic bullshit blown out of proportion.
These fires in western Russia that keep erupting make you wonder whos watching the shop in Siberia/Eastern Russia. At least Russia has a loyal Chinese ally to watch its back.

(32,855 posts)But it made US news last week. Apparently one of them were involved with terrorist attack at a church in Turkey. Never heard of ISIS Georgia Province, but whatever....(Georgia is Christianity established state religion, so don't know how ISIS fits in, but whatever...Since I'm Armenian, I'm like what? Maybe Georgia is a conduit??)
Additionally, today, the Department of State designated Adam Khamirzaev (Khamirzaev), the ISIS Georgia Province emir. Khamirzaev provided guidance to this smuggling network on activities in support of ISIS. Khamirzaev is being designated pursuant to E.O. 13224, as amended, for being a leader of ISIS, a person whose property and interest in property are blocked pursuant to E.O. 13224.

(Sorry if this rambling and confusing, but that's how I felt when I first read about it, I was left scratching my head) Not much info available.
Islamic State Caucasus Province
After 2021, the group's fate is unknown. With the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the organization became leaderless.
In April 2024, Vilayat Kavkaz (sector Ingushetia) released an audio message regarding the situation of the group, according to them the group is getting stronger, bigger and more active. The group is trying to choose a leader after 2021. [26] [27]
On 22 April 2024, suspected ISIS gunmen attacked a Russian police patrol in the town of Karachayevsk in Russias North Caucasus republic of Karachayevo-Cherkessia, killing 2 police officers and wounding a third, in addition to seizing their service weapons (a pistol and rifle) and some ammunition.[28]
On 28 April 2024, suspected ISIS gunmen attacked a Russian police post in the village of Mara-Ayagy of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic, driving up to the police post before throwing explosives and opening fire, killing 2 police officer and wounding at least 4 others. All of the attackers were allegedly killed during the attack.[29]

(32,855 posts)They attacked a church in Istanbul recently. Keep in mind that synagogues are fewer in number than churches, especially in the Caucasus.
