http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2012-11-29/why-did-florida-fire-allen-westWhy Did Florida Fire Allen West?
By Michael C. Bender on November 29, 2012
Allen West is still surprised that Floridas voters have kicked him out of Congress after only two years. Why would anyone want to get rid of a person that is born and raised in the inner city, third of four generations in the militaryjust an American success story? asks West, from the living room of his Palm Beach Gardens home overlooking a pool and golf course. Im not some guy that came from a rich political family or anything like that, he says. Im just an everyday guy, but I have a passion for my country.

Really?
You call 80 of your colleagues Communists, you tell key Democrats to "get the hell out of America", you go off on an email rant against a colleague by calling her "vile, despicable and not a lady," you say that Obama voters are "a threat to the gene pool", you say that the sole Muslim member of Congress whom you've never even met "represents the antithesis of the principles upon which this nation was founded," you claim that people with "Coexist" bumper stickers want to give the country away, and you failed to offer a single meaningful piece of legislation in your two years of office.
I'm so glad my state removed this cancer to its legislative delegation. You have no idea.
Does. Not. Play. Well. With. Others.

(4,340 posts)Congrats to his district.
Tommy_Carcetti
(43,436 posts)It was the district he fled to because he was too chickenshit to run for re-election in the district that originally elected him.
He's a classic case of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Him self proclaiming himself an "American Success Story" is evident of that.

This POS has no idea what is really taking place in the world. He's spent his life in a government funded cocoon.

(7,515 posts)is a Republican stronghold...like most of the state. Only the counties with the largest concentrations of former 'Yankees" are Blue....That they are also the largest population centers helps in presidential elections. 17 of Florida's 27 Representatives are Republicans, however.
The new district West ran in takes in a section of Palm Beach County that is very white, very wealthy and very worried about those capital gains tax rates...he won there by just 190 votes which says a lot about how disliked he is....

(2,522 posts)guy, you could vote to elect Hitler or Stalin. Unfortunately, the circumstances of one's birth and economic status do not always ensure moral integrity. In the case of this POS, he got lost in his circumstances of his birth and economic status.

(7,515 posts)I lived in Palm Beach Gardens until 1 year ago...in the same subdivision West now graces with his charming personality (disorder).
Before mailing in his absentee ballot, my diehard republican ex-hubby called to ask about the ballot measures. I went over them with him and then we began discussing candidates. For the first time ever he split his vote. I couldn't move him off of Romney, but I persuaded him to vote for Bill Nelson and Patrick Murphy. Originally he said, "I can't vote for that screaming asshole West, so I'm writing in your name" I countered with "That is equivalent to a half vote for West, vote for Murphy so you can be rid of him." He did and is.
What is still so depressing is that West won his slice of Palm Beach County by 190 votes. St. Lucie County came through for Murphy. I hope he proves to be an excellent representative, I hate these close run elections.

(4,672 posts)Allen West and Michelle Bachman are proof that the GOP isn't filled with looney white men, but is filled with looney people of all colors, genders and backgound.
Crazy and ignorance doesn't know race and gender and circumstance, but it apparently does "know" political party.

(256 posts)Racism has been so endemic in the GOP since the 1970s that it takes an extremist to be more disgusted by Republican racism than Democratic liberalism. That's why so many moderate-to-conservative non-whites vote Democratic (whereas their White counterparts may vote GOP) and why the few sane Black people still in the GOP endorse Obama. Ted Cruz, Alan Keyes, Allen West, J. C. Watts, Mia Love, and Herman Cain are all as nutty as Bachmann or Demint.

glad you got rid of that McCarthyite virus also. Now about these shootings of unarmed teenagers who just happen to be african-american. What's going on in your state there? Black confidence got some people worried? Just thinking and wondering about florida social culture. My friend almost had me ready to move, with the photos of beaches, her in her swimsuit, the fauna and flora, but naw. People seem pretty uptight there.
Tommy_Carcetti
(43,436 posts)We're part laid back, part uptight. Part open-minded, part bigoted. Part old, part young. (Two of the biggest out of state stereotypes of Florida are either old people in a retirement home, or young college kids partying on spring break) You can't seem to figure us out, and that's what makes us so fun. And it's not a Northern transplant versus Old Southern thing either. Some of the biggest bigots down here come straight from New York and New Jersey, and some of the most open minded people are native Floridians.
But on the whole, we're looking a lot better. We went for Obama twice, sent two Republican incumbents packing and picked up two new districts as well, knocked out the presumptive Republican speaker of the house. But thanks to the miracle of gerrymandering, our legislature is still bright red, and we still have a medicare fraud of a governor.
As Michael Scott of The Office once said, Florida is a lovely, colorful lawless swamp. I love the beauty of the state and the weather. Hate some of the politics, but it makes for great Carl Hiaasen novels. In the end wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the country (well strike that, maybe Hawaii).

(18,124 posts)maybe I'll head west. But wait! What you described as being Florida sounds suspiciously like most of the other states of our union. Oh well I'll stay in cold michigan.

(1,245 posts)After 45 years in Florida, I'm counting the days until I leave. Ridiculous weather, the most corrupt legislature in the nation, endless sprawl.
Tommy_Carcetti
(43,436 posts)The legislature and the sprawl do suck royally, but are evened out by some of the more promising political developments lately and Florida's many beautiful untouched natural areas.

(1,034 posts)You know a Republican area is, frankly, free to elect a Republican. But Allen West was probably one of the worst Representatives elected from anywhere, anytime.
There are others and it comes down to candidates that play to the teabagger and right wing tycoon constituancy, now there is diversity. No tycoon would ever put themselves in a position to be close to a teabagger. And no teabagger ever practices critical thinking in their expressions and beliefs.
Others who were reelected were Michelle Bachmann, Eric Cantor, and of course Paul Ryan, I have a feeling we will be hearing less noisy rhetoric from these clowns this session.
We really need to fix the campaign financing debacle as soon as possible.
Tommy_Carcetti
(43,436 posts)He was surrounded by a small but incredibly devout group of teabaggers who thought him an American hero, a great truth teller, and seriously thought he was presidential material (some even encouranging him to run in 2012).
All he heard was that praise from this small group, and it warped his deluded little mind that everyone must like him. Never mind the liberals and Democrats who he constantly insulted. Never mind independents. Never mind even more reasonably minded Republicans who knew that one of their own acting like a fool was not helpful to their party. None of these people even existed in the mind of Brave Sir Allen, at least in terms of actual human beings who vote and not just strawman caricatures.
It was the ultimate group think amongst Allen and his band of merry men.

(10,252 posts)he put a gun next to someone's head during interrogation. That alone would disqualify him. It's not nice to torture people, and it's illegal. He should have been court marshalled, but he resigned his commission to avoid prosecution.
