They've made a show of rejecting one scoundrel, so why waste time doing it again, especially with a guy they want to take down the Kenyan muslim usurper communist Wall Street-bailouter.

On edit: See also the points customerserviceguy makes in #4 below. The voluntary bow-out and freshness made the rejecting much, much easier, politically.

He decided not to run for office again, and they didn't find a way to kick him out of office before his term was up. Also, there's the difference with the freshness of the offense, Newtie has had time to come back to Jaysus again after his 'fall', Sanford was rubbing their noses in it while he was still doing it.

He was in his second term, and could not run again, at least not for Governor. The only reason they didn't kick him out of office was because the prospect of his being replaced by the Lt. Governor at the time was far worse. The thought of "Governor Andre Bauer" was too horrific for even the most die-hard moralists.

Gingrich couldn't keep it in his pants but he kept it in the country.

Gingrich is running against...

1) the media (intellectualism, science, facts, education),

2) the Democrats (equality, civil rights, gay rights, religious tolerance, compassion etc.),

3) Regionalism (North, Northeast, Urban, City, Boston, New York etc.)

4) What Southern voters traditionally and historically hate most... the black guy.

5) Anger/resentment/chip on their shoulder

Add these 5 elements together and you have everything Gingrich needed to appeal to the south. Mark Sanford did not have these same elements in his immediate political realm. This is why there is a double standard regarding how South Carolina voters are viewing the two situations.

If Gingrich was a Democrat, he'd be hated just as much as they still hate Bill Clinton, who they still condemn for for just cheating on his only wife.

He just shot back with a vitriol-laced attack at the media, and that's the surest way to the GOP base's heart.
