Peggy Noonan: Why Can’t Obama Just Give Us What We Want?

Peggy Noonan is one of the wise elders of the right wing and she’s mad at President Obama. Why? He’s so stand-offish! Via DailyKos (emphasis mine):

You watch and wonder: Why does it always have to be cliffs with this president? Why is it always a high-stakes battle? Why doesn’t he shrewdly re-enact Ronald Reagan, meeting, arguing and negotiating in good faith with Speaker Tip O’Neill, who respected very little of what the president stood for and yet, at the end of the day and with the country in mind, could shake hands and get it done? Why is there never a sense with Mr. Obama that he understands the other guys’ real position?

It’s not as if Mr. Boehner and the Republicans wouldn’t deal. They’ve been weakened and they know it. A year ago they hoped winning the Senate and the presidency would break the stasis. They won neither. Mr. Obama not only was re-elected, it wasn’t that close, it was a clean win. If the president was clear about anything throughout the campaign, it was that he wanted to raise taxes on those he calls the rich. So you might say that a majority of the American people just endorsed that move.

No one would know this better than Mr. Boehner, who has risen to where he is in part because he’s good at seeing the lay of the land and admitting what’s there.

So it’s Obama’s fault for not just giving the GOP whatever it wants? How does that work? Oh yeah, I forgot! When Republicans win elections, they have unlimited political power and all must obey their dictates. When a Democrat wins, they really should just “compromise” with the losing minority. And by “compromise” they mean “do everything the way we want or we’ll bring the country to a screeching halt.”

The GOP has either blocked or managed to get all of Obama's goals watered down to mere shadows of what he wanted. This has been the most obstructionist Congress in history

Now, because Obama feels he can break through that because of his huge election win, he's being inflexible now?

Give me a break

But to the election. Who knows what to make of the weighting of the polls and the assumptions as to who will vote? Who knows the depth and breadth of each party’s turnout efforts? Among the wisest words spoken this cycle were by John Dickerson of CBS News and Slate, who said, in a conversation the night before the last presidential debate, that he thought maybe the American people were quietly cooking something up, something we don’t know about.

I think they are and I think it’s this: a Romney win.

Sat Dec 1, 2012, 08:14 PM
Dec 2012

This stupid transparency has ruined most of everything and led to gridlock

It is hilarious how the tea party has sabatoged the way senate work was always done

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

The founding fathers never thought of 24/7/365 media, and Fox TV
(in fact, a foreinger buying media as vanity stations for his own ulterior angles was not suppose to happen.)

In fact, the founding fathers never thought of TV either

Take away the god-damned transparency of 24/7/365 media and then people could hammer out agreements like was the way it was for 200 years plus before The Drudge and Fox came to town.

When one thinks about it, one has to feel bad for the pressure all politicians in congress face every single day of the year.
Left/right/center/extremists/etc.

because it rains down on them 24/7/365

But now that the genie is out of the box, I fear we shall never have that.

IMHO of course, and you all are welcome to yours, though I don't have to agree or disagree with it.

The problem is that Mr. Boehner is not Tip O'Neill. Tip could put partisanship aside for the good of the country, as President Obama has demonstrated time and again during his first term, only to be met with raging ideology from the other side of the aisle.

So Peggy, if you're yearning for the days of old, perhaps you should talk to the members of your own party.
