Against anyone, but particularly against Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders.
Juries please take note, age is specifically noted in the TOS under bigotry/insensitivity.
Are we going to follow our own rules or what?

very off-putting

(28,558 posts)but Ive seen some boomer-bashing happen here too. Neither is correct.
While on the subject, Ive raged about generalizations based on region, state, urban vs rural, etc., for a long time now. Its chauvinistic IMO and causes me to question ones motives for generating such off-putting commentary. It seems to be generally accepted, however, so I address it on a case-by-case basis.

I have heard members of the "gown" part of our community refer to "those people out there."
It is not helpful.

(28,558 posts)I live in a small city at the edge of a major metro area. I am definitely in the country if I go a few miles in some directions. Despite the proliferation of rump paraphernalia in yards four years ago (even eight years ago), its much more scattered nowadays. I realize that every household who didnt put crap on their property wont suddenly switch party affiliation, but I think it indicates a general malaise toward his execrable campaign.
But I digress.
I have met good Democrats and progressives in these areas who dont wear their politics on their sleeve, but still appreciate recognition for their often unheralded accomplishments. It doesnt help to lump the rural population into an uneducated , racist, cousin-fucking cohort. Again, I question the motives of those who persist. Doesnt sound very progressive IMO.

(32,811 posts)I said he wasn't because he's in the house progressive caucus.
The response: "He can't be a progressive because he's promoting fascism".
I doubt he would have been called a fascist if he was from California.
I was peeved at Doggett for wanting an open convention and I do not want one. However, "Texas fascist" is a bit hyperbolic!
Someone piled on Joe Manchin because Manchin's grandfather changed his name from Mancina to Manchin. . Stated that Manchin changed the name himself to appeal to WV racists. (His grandfather changed his name) However, WV has a large Italian population and the other senator is named Capito...duh...Once again more hyperbole!

I love this map!!! I wish we'd get a new one for every election & that the media would start showing this instead of the red state/blue state map which makes it look like the US is predominately conservative.

would be buried in a snowstorm of Boomer rage.
There is a reason why I am one the extraordinarily few sub 30yo (and there are not that many sub 35-40yos either) active posters here.
Just look, for example, at some of the student loans threads.

On edit: I was here early enough that I was one of the relatively few sub 30 folks here once, and there was a somewhat similar dynamic, but (a) I think there were a few more younger folk then than now and (b) I think the dynamic has grown a little more pronounced over the years.

(16,335 posts)Im not young anymore but Im 40 and an older millennial. Ive been on this site since 2003 when I was 19 (the youngest poster then, I believe) and Ive seen tons of anti-Millenial/Gen Z sentiment expressed here. And yes, theres been a bit of boomer bashing too but not near as much.
i am a boomer, age 76. i remember when i was in my teens and early twenties that many in my generation were anti government, supporters of racial justice and advocates of a more open society. they also opposed greed, pollution, and war, especially war. war would have required sacrifice and sacrifice was a dirtier word than fuck. we were given much by our parents. we have left our children a society dominated by greed, hate, and religious fanatism. trump is the epitome of the boomer attitude of if it feels good, do it regardless of the consequences to others. boomers may try to defend themselves as is their right, but their me first bullshit is indefensible.

(32,811 posts)Such as "They don't take their eyes off their phones"
I think it is difficult to motivate youth to vote. But it has always been that way. It's nothing new. It has nothing to do with cell phones etc.
I was young once and I didn't vote. I didn't have a cell phone or a computer etc. I was just too busy.
Youth don't vote for the same reason that many minorities don't vote.
They just have more pressing needs in their life.
After I got done being young, I was raising kids. (Fortunately, today's technology does allow young parents to keep more up to date than I was) I didn't have time to keep with up with politics when I had kids running around my house. We didn't have cable either. My kids' safety, their well being, their schooling, their social lives were always my priority.
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs indicates why.
Youth, young parents and minorities needs often at the base of the pyramid. Civic engagement is at the top.
Many retired people are at the top.
We were all young at one time and we weren't much different than "kids these days" back then.

(39,960 posts)Surprisingly, I picked up the bug, too & throughout my young adult life, I only had a few friends who also voted & followed elections. Some others would vote on occasion if there was an inspiring candidate or a hot issue, but yeah, as a young person very few of my peers were dedicated voters.
As for the cell phone issue, what about all the adults who also are glued to their phone screens? There's the video of the woman who tumbled into a fountain cuz she wasn't watching where she was going. She was late 30s, I'd guess.

(39,960 posts)That's exactly how I got into politics. My friend asked me to be his debate partner. We also volunteered for the Gary Hart for Senate campaign.
When I was a kid, my social studies teacher told the class, "Be sure to register to vote when you turn 21." By the time I turned 18, 18-year-olds could vote.

(455 posts)As a completely uninvolved Observer being Generation X I will say that Boomers as a group are much more addicted to their cell phones and much Ruder about it than younger people.
And while we're on a generational pet peeve. What is with all the people slightly older than myself claiming they don't have email they don't know how to use computers.
Honey computers been around since 1980 you were 30 years old your age has nothing to do with you not using computers that's all on you.

(228 posts)Dianne Feinstein had serious medical issues for years before her death in office at 90. Strom Thurmond stayed in office till he was 100 but had a senior aid act as shadow senator and guide him. At some point everyone will begin to decline and that has to be faced. How to we address this? Mandatory retirement age? Cognitive testing?
CrispyQ
(39,960 posts)Some young people mature faster yet we have minimum age requirements. Personally I'm in favor of upper age limits, too & that's not a popular opinion around here.
IMO, younger candidates generate more energy, probably cuz they engage younger people, but especially after someone older has been in office. Look at JFK, Bill Clinton, Obama, & now Harris & the new energy they all generated after older men had been in office. This was a good move. I feel badly how it went down cuz Joe deserved to be treated more respectfully publicly, but he's a trooper & he knows that what counts is who wins in November.
Joe Biden will go down as one of the most influential politicians of our time & one of the most effective & productive presidents ever.

(17,065 posts)Absolutely fair game. When he's spent 4+ years ripping apart a president who's only a few years older than him for his age and mental capacity then we have a duty to point out the hypocrisy.
LeftInTX
(32,811 posts)Calling him "too old" is no different than "fat shaming".
Now that we have a younger candidate is it really fair to bash his age?
Let his age, demeanor, demographics speak for itself.

(19,853 posts)Saying that Trump is 78 and in possible mental decline and questionable health overall is TELLING the truth. He has been quite adamant about keeping that information under wraps.
Saying that Trump should NOT be running due to his age and making fun of it is AGEISM.
The MAGA Republicans were making hay of Joe's age solely for the purpose of taking the attention off their guy's age and physical condition to prop his image up.

Much like there are plenty of jobs that require a touch of wisdom and experience.
