Ive spent the past 27 working for a program that helps at-risk young people succeed. Just curious, what exactly has JD Vance done to help children who arent his own?

I'm a teacher. All levels. All races, all nationalities, all levels of socio-economic strata. Mainstream and special needs.
I may have had an impact on thousands of children in the 40+ years in classrooms.
Bite me.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) When JD Vance founded Our Ohio Renewal a day after the 2016 presidential election, he promoted the charity as a vehicle for helping solve the scourge of opioid addiction that he had lamented in Hillbilly Elegy, his bestselling memoir. But Vance shuttered the nonprofit last year and its foundation in May, shortly after clinching the state's Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, according to state records reviewed by The Associated Press. An AP review found that the charity's most notable accomplishment sending an addiction specialist to Ohios Appalachian region for a yearlong residency was tainted by ties among the doctor, the institute that employed her and Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer of OxyContin.
The mothballing of Our Ohio Renewal and its dearth of tangible success raise questions about Vances management of the organization. His decision to bring on Dr. Sally Satel is drawing particular scrutiny. She's an American Enterprise Institute resident scholar whose writings questioning the role of prescription painkillers in the national opioid crisis were published in The New York Times and elsewhere before she began the residency in the fall of 2018.
Documents and emails obtained by ProPublica for a 2019 investigation found that Satel, a senior fellow at AEI, sometimes cited Purdue-funded studies and doctors in her articles on addiction for major news outlets and occasionally shared drafts of the pieces with Purdue officials in advance, including on occasions in 2004 and 2016. Over the years, according to the report, AEI received regular $50,000 donations and other financial support from Purdue totaling $800,000.
EDIT
D.R. Gossett, CEO of the Ironton-Lawrence County Community Action Organization, who helped oversee Satels roughly $70,000 residency, said she helped people who were struggling in southern Ohio and to this day, people are thankful for her presence. That included treating an unspecified number of patients in a region long designated a health care shortage area and what Gossett described as community planning efforts. After the residency ended, Satel's public remarks suggested she remained as convinced as ever that addiction stems from combined behavioral and environmental forces not the documented overprescribing and aggressive marketing of OxyContin and other opioids that helped families and state, local and tribal governments ultimately secure a $6 billion national settlement against Purdue in March.

(855 posts)My cat Moe, rest his soul, used to pee in our shoes. The elevated shoe rack in our front hall remains as a poignant reminder of times gone by. Please consider mentioning this alternative insult to your dear Doris in case she encounters JD's shoes. I will speak to my Tigger, Bootsie, and Wolfie. However, I do believe Moe's peeing was to mark us as his very own, so maybe contemptuous puke is less of a 'mixed message'? Only the cats can decide, of course. 😼😅

(48,863 posts)He has a lot of disdain for people he grew up with in Southern Ohio using government benefits that he feels they don't deserve.
He went to Ohio State with GI bill tuition benefits. And got a full ride scholarship to Yale Law. Good for him. But he doesn't want others to have such opportunities.

The Ohio senator and freshly minted Republican presidential nominee once dismissed Vice President Kamala Harris now the likely Democratic presidential nominee as a legitimate stakeholder in the nation she hopes to lead because, he argued, she did not have any children of her own and instead kept cats as pets.
"We're effectively run in this country via the Democrats, via our corporate oligarchs, by childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices they've made," Vance told then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson in 2021.....
After that clip aired, the show's producers cut to Brzezinski sitting at her desk and stroking a cat on her lap.
"I've just got to say," she said dryly as others on set laughed, "My kids are older. Does that make me childless? I want to qualify."....
"If people are saying, well, this is just because Joe was a member [of Congress] so long ago, I keep talking about the guy in Iowa," Scarborough added. "What's his name? Steve King, yeah, they got rid of him in 2015 or 2016 for saying things then that would have put him, like, at the Republican National Convention in primetime giving speeches. I'm not joking, like, I'm not joking. That is how quickly the Republican Party has gone. They keep losing elections. Just run as a Republican, a traditional Republican. You'd be shocked at what might happen on the national level."

(300 posts)What kind of father, what kind of parent, would join and champion a political party that dares castigate his own progeny for being of mixed race? When he tucks his precious children into bed each night, when he kisses their foreheads "goodnight", how does he justify supporting those who see them as lesser, as unworthy, as undesirable? No "childless cat lady" would ever devalue his children based on their heritage or the color of their skin. How, then, can he?

(4 posts)Id like to see the Swifties shine a light on it. Taylor Swift is childless and famously a cat lover. So Vance basically insulted her. That is not going to go over well. I look forward to the backlash.
