(3,359 posts)And he would make an awesome president in 8 years.
You HAVE got to listen to Walz speak to people. He is great.

Ocelot II
(125,267 posts)he isn't well-known nationally, and he doesn't bring swing state votes (MN hasn't voted for a Republican in decades). I love him but would rather keep him here.
edisdead
(3,359 posts)He has an impressive background and would be a good one to start grooming for a serious run later. The way our state has prospered since him becoming governor has been fantastic.
Also Flanagan would step in and she is awesome too!

(125,267 posts)I do think Walz is really impressive but they might be looking for someone with more of a national reputation. Shapiro and Whitmer have gotten a lot of press and they are excellent speakers (but Whitmer has said she doesn't want to do it). Mark Kelly was an astronaut so he's got that military hero vibe, and his wife is Gabby Giffords so there's the gun control angle, but it wouldn't be good to lose a Democrat from the Senate right now. So they'll probably go with a governor. My bet is it will be Shapiro (who would bring PA), but what do I know? Any of them would work for me.

(3,215 posts)Clinton beat Trump by less that 1.5%.
Ocelot II
(125,267 posts)maybe taking a win here for granted. I remember being really annoyed when I wanted a lawn sign and none of the campaign offices I contacted had any idea where I could get one. There seemed to have been almost no presence in the state, even Minneapolis/St. Paul. I'm assuming Harris' campaign will have learned a few lessons from that mistake. Nothing can be taken for granted.

(4,016 posts)I do not think she gave an answer for VP and I think if asked she will do it. We love our Gov here in Michigan. Any of those are good choices, I am partial to Shapiro and Kelly however.

(1,305 posts)and I agree with you, she's staying put IMO. I love the idea of an all woman ticket but I don't think that passes muster this time around. Maybe In the future though.

(2,786 posts)Whitmer - two females would be one too many
Shapiro - too valuable as governor
Walz - not a swing state
Cooper - I don't know anything about him, FWIW
Kelly - swing state, male, moderate, reasonably well-known nationally, vet, compelling story, etc.

If not going for a blue-collar pick, go Slayer (secretary) Pete all the way! Im such a huge fan!!
His unparalleled talent more than compensates for any perceived lack of experience in winning elections. Im shocked he didnt make the short list. No one can deliver a message like he can, and he serves it gift-wrapped with a smile. The way he eviscerated JD Vance on Bill Maher was legendary! Everyone would have loved to have seen him have the opportunity to shred Vance in person in a debate. It would have been epic!
Edited to add that I heard Vance list Pete as being childless during his unhinged, childless cat lady diatribe. I would have loved to see Pete dismantle his vile, sexist, and homophobic rant, exposing his ignorance by mentioning that he and Chasten have two beautiful children.

(11,890 posts)I'm betting that Pete told her privately that he didn't want the job. The red states are going to have a hard enough time dealing with a Black Woman running for President. They might not accept a gay man in the VP role. Plus, I think he's either going to stay where he is at DoT, or go for SecState.

(7,042 posts)If he ever wants to go for it again. It is not common in my lifetime for VP to successfully shift to POTUS. Harris is in a unique position, thankfully.
If they put him in something with strong international networking, it will complement what he already gained domestically in his current role.
Yes, you can tell. I really like "Mayor Pete".
Blinken is doing a great job at State, he needs to stay there.

(323 posts)Bernie was on CNN last night and said that he hopes that whoever she picks will be devoted to workers rights. I know Joe has blue collar roots and hope her VP pick can also. It would also defend against the liberal elite attacks that are no doubt coming our way, esp from Vance.
Any thoughts on who might fit that bill?

A. When a vacancy occurs in the office of United States senator or representative in Congress by reason of death or resignation, or from any other cause and except as provided in subsection D of this section, the vacancy shall be filled at the next general election. At such an election the person elected shall fill the unexpired term of the vacated office.
B. For a vacancy in the office of representative in Congress, if the next general election is not to be held within six months after the date of the occurrence of the vacancy, the governor shall call a special primary election and a special general election to fill the vacancy. The governor shall call the special primary election and establish its date within seventy-two hours after the office is officially declared vacant. Notwithstanding sections 16-313, 16-351 and 16-542, for a candidate for office at an election held pursuant to this subsection, the following apply:
1. The special primary election shall be held not less than one hundred twenty nor more than one hundred thirty-three days after the occurrence of the vacancy, and the special general election shall be held not less than seventy nor more than eighty days after the special primary election.
2. Nomination papers and nomination petitions shall be filed not later than thirty days after the date of the proclamation calling the election.
3. Any court action challenging the nomination of a candidate shall be filed not later than 5:00 p.m. on the fifth business day after the last day for filing nomination papers and petitions.
4. The superior court shall hear and render a decision within five days after the filing of the action.
5. Beginning fifteen days before the date of the election, the county recorder or other officer in charge of elections shall mail early ballots within forty-eight hours after receipt of a complete and correct early ballot request from persons qualified to vote.
C. For a vacancy in the office of United States senator, the governor shall appoint a person to fill the vacancy. That appointee shall be of the same political party as the person vacating the office and, except as provided in subsection D of this section, shall serve until the person elected at the next general election is qualified and assumes office. If the person vacating the office changed political party affiliation after taking office, the person who is appointed to fill the vacancy shall be of the same political party that the vacating officeholder was when the vacating officeholder was elected or appointed to that office.
D. If a vacancy in the office of United States senator occurs more than one hundred fifty days before the next regular primary election date, the person who is appointed pursuant to subsection C of this section shall continue to serve until the vacancy is filled at the next general election. If a vacancy in the office of United States senator occurs one hundred fifty days or less before the next regular primary election date, the person who is appointed shall serve until the vacancy is filled at the second regular general election held after the vacancy occurs, and the person elected shall fill the remaining unexpired term of the vacated office.
E. For a vacancy in the office of representative in Congress that occurs simultaneously with at least one hundred additional vacancies in the office of representative in Congress as prescribed by 2 United States Code section 8, a special general election to fill the vacancy in this state shall be held not more than forty-nine days after the declaration of the vacancy unless a regularly scheduled general election or previously scheduled special general election is held within seventy-five days after the declaration of the vacancy.

(525 posts)Secondly, for those with money on Shapiro. I'm in PA, love Shapiro, and voted for him. However, he may hit a snag, having signed an order in May, regarding state employees, that raised free speech questions in these extremely fraught times.

(11,337 posts)Others are in offices where they are doing good. Some that would be at risk of falling into Republican hands if vacated. Roy Cooper is term-limited, so can't run again. And seems he has good things going for him, like reaching across the divide on "kitchen table" issues.
