General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWe live in a swing state. Wisconsin it has been in the grips of RW party since Scott Walker. Recently we have seen the..
.... slow but steady move back to our old purple status. The election of a Democratic Governor and Supreme Court Justice shifted the balance back to leaning left.
Although we have voted in every election since 1971, I have to admit we were both very discouraged by the upcoming 2024 Presidential election. Between the talking heads and the polling numbers, we were not optimistic about our chances of keeping the White House and Congress. We continued to donate to the local races and Biden / Harris.
We are retired and on fixed incomes, so we give what we can at least once a month.
That all changed over the weekend and mid-day Monday. Biden made the heroic move to step down and pass the torch to VP Harris. Boy, what a difference 48 hours has made. For the first time in months, we have hope.
We just stretched this month's budget and sent our first $120.00 donation to Presidential Candidate Kamala Harris. We will send at least that again every month until election day.
President Kamala Harris, doesn't that sound great? The country's first woman President.
Let's get out AND MAKE IT HAPPEN !!!

You pay for the postage - postage and your time are your donation to the cause . I did it for 2016/after. They cover general election, house elections every 2 years, as well as local and state elections.

(7,956 posts)I thought changing candidates would be a disaster but lo and behold...
I haven't felt this positive about the outlook for the country since Rep Obama turned into President Obama, which was awhile ago.
This is it, they threw down the gauntlet at the wrong time with these outrageous behavior and SC rulings that few people agree with and apparently they thought there's nothing we can do about it.
Boy, are they going to be in for a surprise if Joe and Karmela exercise their newfound super powers and right a few wrongs.

(24,486 posts)We lost big time here in the 2010 midterm election when Democrats controlled the state senate and legislature but became complacent, not voting, while Republicans turned out in droves and in 1 election flipped the legislature to GOP control, also taking the governorship and losing the Senate seat held by Russ Feingold. Since 2010 was a census year, Republicans set about to gerrymandering the state when they took power in '11 and has helped them to hold power since. Bad things happen when Democrats choose not to vote. But we are clawing our way back.
The state supreme court could flip back to conservative if we don't get out and support the liberal candidate next spring.

(21,214 posts)I was doubly crushed in 2016. Trump getting elected was bad enough in itself, but that combined with missing our first real chance to finally elect a woman president was a devastating double whammy. Since then, I've started to think I might not live long enough to see a woman potus in my lifetime, and now, all of a sudden, there's real hope of that happening in the near future! Not a guarantee, of course,, but a brilliant, qualified woman running on the Dem ticket against a GOP candidate a lot of people absolutely can't stand is a very good start!

(30,614 posts)i want to tell this story because it's kind of funny. one of the worst things for me personally was that i was in Philly all alone working during the 2016 election. Then DU crashed omigawd, the hotel was evacuated, and the entire time i was fretting constantly because I could see that TCFSF was winning. Then he did.
The next day I had to work and on my break I walked to the nearest Starbucks. I was so distraught! There was all young people around me and I, nearly in tears, apologized to them all. I said, "I'm sorry because it's my generation that fucked this all up for y'all."
They gave me 2 free lattes lol. I don't think, looking back, that many of them that day apprehended what a catastrophe had just befallen us all.

(38,036 posts)It can happen again with people like you working as hard as you can. Don't give up! Get your friends to help out too.
My Mom was born in Madison, and her entire family was from Wisconsin. My Grandma was from Madison, Grandpa came from LaCrosse. As far as I know we still have cousins living in Madison. There are still lots of good people in Wisconsin.
Another thing - despite how we talk here on DU, not everyone watches Faux Noise. I believe Faux Noise is a pox on older folks who sit home and watch TV constantly. But if they can be convinced to stop watching Faux for just a few weeks, watch anything else, or read books for a change. Whatever! Sometimes that's all it takes to convince them that Chump and the MAGAs are just evil. Or if they aren't evil, they're stupid.
Either way, intelligent, thoughtful Americans are tuning them out. I believe that most people in Wisconsin are intelligent and thoughtful. By this fall I predict that Americans will be tuning out Chump and Faux Noise out, and voting BLUE for the first time in a long time!
