We just had what one of my friends called an "alarmingly large" earthquake here. It lasted a long time and rattled my china. No magnitude yet.

(46,436 posts)At least not here along the highway system. Out in the Bush, yeah, life's rougher, but the majority of us live pretty much like you do. About 700,000 people in the state, approximately a third of those here in Anchorage. Village life, of course, is much different.

(44,397 posts)long walk to the outhouse, bears and such. beautiful cabins.
Then the other survival type shows - establishing a skewed view of life in Alaska.
Blue_In_AK
(46,436 posts)They were looking for a cabin down around Homer, which is where my brother lives. In fact, I'm familiar with that octagon house. My brother and his family did live way out on East End Road in a small cabin with little plumbing -- I think they had running water in the sink but no shower or toilet. They hauled drinking water and showered at the athletic club in town. They were out there for several years but have since moved closer in to town with all the amenities.
There really are a lot of people in the state who live in more primitive surroundings than I do, but I agree that the reality shows paint a skewed picture of life in this beautiful place.

(2 posts)The first one shook my house a bit and caused my sons to run out of their rooms. The one that followed 4-7 seconds after was stronger and caused ME to stand up and get my shoes on. No fun!

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) A strong earthquake Monday was felt over a 175-mile swath of Alaska, including the state's largest city, but there were no immediate reports of damage beyond items knocked off shelves.
The Alaska and West Coast Tsunami Warning Center said the magnitude-5.8 earthquake occurred at about 4:45 p.m. and was centered about 30 miles northwest of Anchorage. The Alaska Earthquake Information Center said the center was 27 miles west of Anchorage.
Guy Urban, a geophysicist at the tsunami warning center, said the quake wasn't expected to generate a tsunami.
He said the center had reports of residents feeling the quake throughout the Anchorage metro area and beyond. It was also felt as far south as the fishing community of Homer, 125 miles southwest of Anchorage, and in Willow, 50 miles north of the city.
