An independent Roman Catholic newspaper in the United States called Monday for a campaign to reverse the Vaticans refusal to allow women to become priests.
Barring women from ordination to the priesthood is an injustice that cannot be allowed to stand, the National Catholic Reporter said, waving a red flag in front of the Vatican over one of its most strongly held teachings.
The call to the priesthood is a gift from God, it said, and excluding women from responding to that call has no strong basis in Scripture or any other compelling rationale.
With bishops and theologians on record as opposing womens ordination, the Missouri-based biweekly a respected voice of the Churchs reformist wing said it now fell upon the faiths rank and file to press for change.

(71,265 posts)We have been ordaining women to be bishops since the 80's. The World Wide Anglican Communion which we are members and the Church of England is the mother church needs to make this uniform. The Roman Catholic Church needs to do this to, and the bishop of Rome needs to lead on this.

(6,278 posts)I've sent her stuff from NCR before and she considers them a bunch of radicals who hate the church and not Catholic at all. Unfortunately for the Catholic church, the dynamic these days is for the conservatives to circle the wagons against any kind of change and drive away everyone else.
